LayarHijau – The newly premiered mystery adventure drama Mystic Nine has quickly become one of China’s hottest TV topics. Written by Nanpai Sanshu, directed by Bai Shan, and starring William Chan, the Republican-era series has gone viral after countless viewers admitted they were genuinely frightened while watching it.
The buzz grew so large that the keyword “Mystic Nine horror movie” climbed China’s trending searches. Many viewers joked that they had accidentally started watching a ghost movie rather than a tomb-raiding mystery drama. The reactions became so widespread that the production team eventually stepped in to clarify that Mystic Nine is definitely not a horror series.

William Chan reprises his iconic role as Zhang Qishan, also known as Zhang Dafoye, the military commander responsible for defending Changsha. Dressed in his signature Republican-era military uniform, Chan has earned praise from longtime fans, many of whom say he looks almost unchanged from when he first played the character years ago.
Meanwhile, Joseph Zeng takes on the role of Wu Laogou, the Fifth Master of the Nine Gates. His performance captures the character’s intelligence, cunning personality, and youthful charm. Throughout the series, Wu Laogou is accompanied by his spiritual dog, Sancunding, another signature element of the character.
The relationship between Zhang Qishan and Wu Laogou is one of the drama’s biggest highlights. They begin the story on opposing sides and even engage in a fierce confrontation inside an ancient tomb, where the two nearly strangle each other. As the mystery unfolds, however, they gradually join forces to uncover the truth. Chen Yao also appears as Huo Xiangu alongside several other key members of the Nine Gates, adding another layer to the complex power dynamics between the factions.
The story begins after the 401 Unit under Zhang Qishan’s command lines up inside a hospital on a rainy night before mysteriously vanishing without a trace. No footprints or signs of movement are left behind, leaving investigators with almost no clues.
Determined to solve the bizarre disappearance, Zhang Qishan and Wu Laogou follow the only lead available—an underground ancient tomb known as Geshi Lou. Their investigation soon pulls them into a labyrinth of deadly traps and increasingly unsettling mysteries.
The drama features several sequences that have left viewers thoroughly unnerved. In one scene, the main characters become trapped inside an endless maze where buildings contain streets and streets conceal even more streets, making escape seemingly impossible. Another of the show’s most talked-about moments takes place inside an underground opera stage, where a headless mummified corpse appears to be performing while shadowy figures silently watch from the audience.
The mounting tension has sparked countless reactions online. Some viewers said they still got chills even while watching in broad daylight, while others joked that they could only continue watching with on-screen bullet comments (danmu) turned on because reading other viewers’ reactions made the experience less terrifying.
Director Bai Shan intentionally crafted the show’s eerie atmosphere through two contrasting visual styles. Scenes set above ground feature warm colors that reflect everyday life during the Republican era, while the underground world is dominated by cold blue-green tones. Combined with dim lighting, first-person camera angles, and realistic sound design, the production creates an intense psychological horror atmosphere rooted in traditional Chinese aesthetics.
Despite its frightening presentation, Mystic Nine is not actually a supernatural story. As the plot develops, the mysteries point toward a conspiracy involving the Japanese military using a special substance to create bioengineered monsters. At the same time, the various factions within the Nine Gates become entangled in a dangerous struggle for power both above and below ground.
With its gripping storyline, cinematic production values, and chilling psychological atmosphere, Mystic Nine has emerged as one of the most talked-about Republican-era mystery dramas in China. Even though the production team continues to stress that it is not a horror series, many viewers insist it is scary enough to make them think otherwise.
