LayarHijau – Republican-era romance drama Overdo (这一秒过火), starring Zhang Linghe and Wang Churan, has become one of the latest hot topics on Chinese social media. But instead of its sweeping love story, it’s the show’s dialogue that has unexpectedly taken center stage.
Many viewers have described the script as excessively melodramatic, with several lines reminding them of the billionaire romance web novels that dominated online reading platforms years ago. Quotes such as, “So this is what kissing you for the first time feels like,” and, “She’s alive. I’ve lost my mind,” quickly spread across social media, sparking memes, jokes, and heated discussions. As those lines went viral, behind-the-scenes clips of the cast trying—and often failing—to deliver them with a straight face became just as popular.

The footage shows that Zhang Linghe had the hardest time getting through some of the dialogue without laughing.
After delivering the line, “She’s alive. I’ve lost my mind,” the actor immediately burst into laughter, forcing the crew to stop and reset for another take. He reacted the same way while reciting other intensely dramatic lines describing punishments such as “tearing out tendons and skinning someone alive” or “grinding bones into ashes.” On several occasions, he had to pause, compose himself, and start over before filming could continue.

Wang Churan initially managed to stay in character, but that quickly became more difficult once Zhang Linghe started laughing. Every time the two made eye contact, she struggled to suppress a smile, often turning her head away in an attempt to regain her composure before eventually laughing along. The repeated bloopers left the set filled with laughter from both the cast and crew.

One of the most talked-about lines appears in Episode 3 during a forced-kiss scene, when the male lead says, “So this is what kissing you for the first time feels like.” Chinese netizens jokingly labeled it the show’s “hardest line to deliver with a straight face,” saying it instantly reminded them of the exaggerated romance fiction that flooded the internet more than a decade ago.

Another widely discussed line, “She’s alive. I’ve lost my mind,” also divided audiences. Some viewers felt it effectively captured the character’s overwhelming emotions, while others said it completely pulled them out of the scene and questioned the script’s writing.
The jokes didn’t stop with the dialogue. Episode titles such as “I Want You to Surrender and Beg for Mercy,” “This Time You Can’t Escape,” and “You Can Never Bring Yourself to Be Ruthless” were also mocked for sounding more like promotional taglines for vertical micro-dramas than titles for a full-length television series.

Even one of the original novel’s famous lines, “Bitter fruit is still fruit,” became part of the online jokes after netizens jokingly rewrote it as “Red fruit is still fruit,” poking fun at what they saw as the adaptation’s resemblance to the free micro-dramas commonly found online.

Not everyone viewed the over-the-top dialogue as a weakness, however. Some argued that Overdo had reached the point where its exaggerated style had become part of its appeal. Watching Zhang Linghe repeatedly crack up while trying to stay in character—and Wang Churan gradually losing the battle to keep a straight face—ended up becoming just as entertaining as the drama itself.
