LayarHijau – The competition in the Chinese drama scene is fiercer than ever! Amidst a wave of high-profile releases, the new romantic drama Road to Success, starring Esther Yu and Chen Jingke, is making serious waves.
Although its premiere ratings narrowly took second place behind Song Weilong and Zhang Jingyi’s Love for You, Road to Success successfully outshone its other major time-slot rival, The Eternal Fragrance, starring Ju Jingyi and Song Weilong. For Esther Yu, this project marks a crucial comeback following a recent dip in popularity. Thanks to three standout strengths, the drama is quickly winning over viewers’ hearts and proving to be a massive hit!

Sizzling ‘Enemies-to-Lovers’ Chemistry
In Road to Success, Esther Yu plays Lin Wanxing, a psychology PhD whose life takes a turn after an academic scandal. Embracing a laid-back lifestyle, she returns to her hometown to work as a school equipment manager and part-time counselor. Meanwhile, Chen Jingke (fresh off his hit drama In Blizzard) stars as Wang Fa, a disciplined soccer coach who leaves a lucrative career abroad.
By chance, they end up as colleagues and housemates—specifically, Lin Wanxing rents out a section of her home to Wang Fa, meaning they share the same roof. The dynamic between her relaxed attitude and his cold, serious demeanor creates a brilliant, bickering-yet-charming chemistry. Their natural acting and engaging banter have been a massive hit with audiences, making every scene they share incredibly fun to watch.
A Major Acting Evolution for Esther Yu
In the past, Esther Yu faced some criticism for leaning too heavily into the “naive, cutesy” archetype with her signature baby voice. Skeptics initially doubted her ability to pull off the role of a brilliant, grounded psychology PhD. However, Road to Success proves them wrong.
Viewers can clearly see her effort to adapt to the role, adopting a calmer, more sincere, and gentle demeanor. She has significantly dialed back her usual bubbly persona. Right from her opening scenes with Chen Jingke, she exudes the quiet intelligence and composure expected of a doctorate graduate. This noticeable shift has earned her widespread praise for her impressive acting growth.
A Refreshing Break from Modern Rom-Com Clichés
One of the biggest draws of Road to Success is that it refuses to rely solely on typical romantic tropes. A huge chunk of the narrative focuses on Lin Wanxing and Wang Fa coaching a high school soccer team. Together, they guide passionate teenagers through their setbacks, helping them navigate family struggles and social trauma with courage and wisdom.
Unlike many modern romance dramas that revolve almost entirely around love triangles and sweet talk, this show breaks the mold. The underdog sports storyline adds a thrilling, hot-blooded energy that keeps viewers hooked and eagerly anticipating the team’s journey to success.
With these three fantastic elements, Road to Success absolutely deserves a top spot on your watchlist! Have you tuned in yet to see Esther Yu’s acting transformation? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
