LayarHijau – The Chinese entertainment world has been buzzing lately with shady rumors surrounding handsome actor Ren Jialun. It all started when a well-known paparazzo, Liu Dacui, claimed that the actor’s marriage is on the rocks and that he’s living apart from his wife.
But amidst all the gossip, a sharp legal analysis is actually shining a light on the sneaky tactics paparazzi use to bait public opinion.

Citing Xiaoxiang Morning News on July 5, legal expert Li Zhenwu dropped a critical take on the situation. A practicing lawyer, he exposed the manipulative modus operandi used by the paparazzo to spread the rumors, which he strongly suspects is a clear case of defamation disguised as facts.
Checking into a Hotel, But Claimed as Proof of a Broken Marriage?
The drama kicked off when Liu Dacui revealed that Ren Jialun was spotted staying at a hotel in Shanghai for two consecutive nights while working. From this simple hotel stay, Liu boldly concluded that the actor is “living apart” from his wife.
However, according to Lawyer Li, crashing at a hotel after a late-night shoot is completely normal. It’s actually standard operating procedure in the entertainment industry so actors don’t have to endure an exhausting commute and risk waking up their families.
Interestingly, Liu Dacui eventually admitted that aside from the hotel stay, he didn’t capture a single piece of visual evidence showing any marital strife or a broken home between Ren Jialun and his wife.
The ‘Soft Defamation’ Playbook: True Facts, False Conclusions
Lawyer Li pointed out the highly manipulative tactics used by the paparazzo. Instead of directly accusing the couple of “living apart” or “divorcing”—which could land him in hot water legally—Liu simply stated the “fact” that the actor was staying at a hotel, then spun a narrative pushing the idea that he “isn’t going home.”
Once the topic started trending, other gossip accounts jumped on the bandwagon, dropping hints like “hasn’t been back to Shanghai in a while” or “hasn’t seen his family in days.” This indirectly baits the public into connecting the dots and concluding on their own that Ren Jialun’s marriage is in trouble.
Li Zhenwu calls this tactic “associative soft defamation.” It’s a highly insidious form of rights infringement where “the facts are true, but the conclusion is false.” While the hotel stay is a real event, the conclusion that their marriage is broken is pure subjective fabrication designed to mislead.
Talking Law: Freedom of Speech Isn’t a Shield for Defamation
According to Article 1024 of the Chinese Civil Code, no organization or individual may infringe upon another’s right to reputation through insult or defamation. The core of a reputation infringement case isn’t about “whether you’re telling the truth,” but rather “whether your actions have lowered the public’s social evaluation of the victim.”
Just relying on the “fact” of a hotel stay—a normal work arrangement—to push a narrative of a “broken marriage” can be seen as having subjective fault, as it intentionally misleads the public.
“The cunning part of this ‘soft defamation’ is allowing the information spreader to hide behind the excuse of ‘I’m just stating the facts,’ while actually exploiting the public’s psychological tendency to make associations to commit the infringement,” Lawyer Li explained.
He emphasized that while the law protects freedom of speech, it will never protect defamation disguised as “stating the facts.”
