In the drama, Ren Jialun plays Lu Qianqiao, a powerful “war spirit” determined to stop the immortals’ conspiracy. To save the world, Lu Qianqiao sacrifices all of his memories to the ancestor of the war spirits in order to become the “perfect war spirit” and obtain overwhelming power.
With that power, he destroys the Jianmu Heavenly Ladder and shatters the immortals’ dream of ascending to godhood. However, the sacrifice also causes him to lose every memory he once had, including his love for Xin Mei, played by Wang Herun.
Even so, viewers were highly satisfied with the finale. In the final scenes, Lu Qianqiao and Xin Mei meet again at a harbor and board the same boat together. Many fans interpreted the moment as a reference to the saying that “sharing the same boat requires a hundred years of fate,” calling it the perfect ending for the couple.
Fate Chooses You was also one of Ren Jialun’s final projects with his former agency, H&R Century. Because of that, the drama did not receive major promotional support during its release, causing word-of-mouth popularity to spread rather slowly at first.
As the story progressed, however, viewers realized the series was far more than a typical romance costume drama. The plot explored themes of immortality, sacrifice, and Lu Qianqiao’s journey toward becoming human. Those themes eventually helped the drama gain positive reactions and once again highlighted Ren Jialun’s acting skills.
In the finale, Lu Qianqiao was only one step away from fully becoming human through a “heart replacement” process. However, he chose to sacrifice everything in order to protect the world he lived in.
Before transforming into the perfect war spirit, Lu Qianqiao already knew he would lose all of his memories. Even so, he moved forward without hesitation.
He said, “Even if the memories disappear, even if I disappear too, as long as this heart remains, everything will still remain.” Lu Qianqiao also believed that even without his memories, he would still make the right choice.
Before sacrificing his memories, Lu Qianqiao summoned Chu Ying, played by Song Wenzuo, a spirit creature who once gained his power and became human. He hoped that if they ever met again in the future, Chu Ying could help him recover his memories.
In the final ending, after losing his memories and wandering through the human world, Lu Qianqiao eventually arrives at a harbor where Chu Ying has long been waiting as a boatman. Seeing Lu Qianqiao again fills him with excitement.
Soon after, Xin Mei also appears at the harbor while searching for Lu Qianqiao with his portrait in hand. Chu Ying invites her onto the same boat, allowing the couple to reunite once again.
The finale left many viewers emotional. Fans praised Lu Qianqiao’s sacrifice and Ren Jialun’s portrayal of the character. Some comments read, “Ren Jialun portrayed Lu Qianqiao perfectly. There are no regrets,” and “Lu Qianqiao was truly a great character.”
