In the first season, Bai Lu played Li Peiyi, a noblewoman investigating the massacre of her family. By the drama’s ending, Li Peiyi discovers that the mastermind behind the tragedy was the kingdom’s right chancellor. She ultimately carries out her revenge in a shocking scene.
After exposing the royal family’s true nature in front of the emperor, Li Peiyi chooses to leave the political world behind. Her lover Xiao Huaijin, played by Wang Xingyue, makes the same decision. The two later walk away from palace life and close their story with a romantic kiss scene.
Meanwhile, Zhao Qing portrayed Wuren, Li Peiyi’s subordinate, who also had her own romance with Gu Lingzhou. Their relationship developed while solving cases together, bringing plenty of sweet moments to the drama.
Although the finale delivered a happy ending, many viewers felt the mystery storyline in the first season was not fully developed. The investigation and case-solving elements were criticized for being too simplistic for a large-scale mystery drama. As a result, after Season 2 was announced, many viewers expressed hopes that the new season would feature more detailed and complex cases.
Wuren’s character also became a target of criticism. Some viewers felt the supporting character received too much screen time, which affected the focus of the main storyline. Since the first season aired, some netizens have even accused producer and Zhao Qing’s manager Yu Zheng of using Bai Lu’s popularity to boost Zhao Qing’s exposure.
On the other hand, many fans also hope Season 2 will spend more time developing Li Peiyi and Xiao Huaijin’s relationship. Viewers felt Bai Lu and Wang Xingyue’s chemistry was not fully explored in the first season. Fans are now hoping to see the couple working together as husband and wife while solving cases, without losing the romantic side of their relationship.
