Sun Li has long been regarded as one of China’s most accomplished television actresses. She rose to massive popularity through Empresses in the Palace and continued her successful run with acclaimed dramas including The Legend of Mi Yue, Nothing Gold Can Stay, and I Will Find You a Better Home.
By the age of 36, Sun Li had already achieved a “grand slam” by winning China’s three biggest television awards: the Feitian Awards, Golden Eagle Awards, and Magnolia Awards. She also became the first actress born after 1980 to accomplish the feat. This year marks her eighth Magnolia Awards nomination.
The Best Actress category is particularly competitive this year. Alongside Sun Li and Wu Yue, Yang Zi also received a nomination for Born to Be Alive, marking her third consecutive year being nominated at the awards. Yang Mi earned a nomination for This Thriving Land, while Ren Suxi was recognized for Endless Protection.
In the Best Actor category, Xiao Zhan made history as the first actor born after 1990 to receive a nomination in the category at the Magnolia Awards. His nomination is also being viewed as a breakthrough moment for costume dramas, which have rarely been recognized in the category over the past decade.
The competition, however, remains intense. Xiao Zhan is facing strong contenders including Hu Ge, who was nominated for Born to Be Alive despite appearing in fewer than seven episodes. The category also includes Bai Yu for Swords into Plowshares, Guo Jingfei for Uncle, and veteran actor Yu Hewei for Silent Honor.
In the drama categories, Born to Be Alive, This Thriving Land, and Legend of Zang Hai emerged as the biggest contenders, with each drama receiving six nominations.
