Perfect Crown Controversy Deepens as Petition to Remove Drama From Streaming Platforms Passes 80% of Target

LayarHijau – The controversy surrounding Perfect Crown (21세기 대군부인), starring IU and Byeon Woo Seok, continues to intensify in South Korea. Even though the drama has already finished airing, public outrage has yet to fade and has now escalated into a national petition calling for the series to be removed from streaming and online video platforms.

On May 22, a petition was posted on the South Korean National Assembly’s public petition board demanding action against the drama over allegations of historical distortion and concerns tied to the “Northeast Project.” As of 5:10 p.m. KST on May 25, the petition had gathered more than 41,000 signatures, surpassing 80% of the minimum threshold required for parliamentary review.

Critics accused Perfect Crown of blurring the line between Korean and Chinese cultural traditions despite being set in a fictional constitutional monarchy version of South Korea. The backlash mainly centered on the drama’s use of costumes, royal ceremonies, terminology, and symbolic imagery that many viewers argued misrepresented Korean history and identity.

Since the series has already completed its television run, the petition’s main demand is no longer to halt broadcasting, but to completely remove the drama from domestic and international streaming services and online video platforms. The petition also calls for the government to withdraw support from the production company and consider restrictions related to broadcasting approvals.

The biggest controversy came from Episode 11, which aired on May 15. In the coronation scene, Grand Prince Ian, played by Byeon Woo Seok, was shown wearing a nine-string ceremonial crown traditionally associated with a subordinate state rather than the twelve-string crown symbolizing an independent emperor.

The scene also drew criticism when royal officials shouted “Cheonse, Cheonse, Cheoncheonse,” which can be interpreted as “Long live Your Majesty for a thousand years,” a royal acclamation historically used for rulers beneath an emperor. Viewers also took issue with the use of Chinese-style tea ceremony traditions and the mixing of Joseon royal symbols with imperial systems.

Critics argued that the production team’s edits came too late. Following the backlash, the drama muted audio in the controversial scenes and removed several subtitles from rebroadcast and streaming versions. However, many viewers said the edits were not enough to undo the damage after the scenes had already spread globally online.

Director Park Joon Hwa and writer Yoo Ji Won previously issued official apologies through interviews and the drama’s website. IU and Byeon Woo Seok also shared handwritten apology letters on social media.

The petition will remain open until June 21. If it surpasses 50,000 signatures within 30 days, the case will officially be referred to a relevant committee in South Korea’s National Assembly for further review.
