The character appears near the end of the novel when Sang Zhi returns to Nanwu. At that time, she and Duan Jiaxu had already been in a relationship for several months, and Sang Zhi often stayed at Duan Jiaxu’s apartment in Yihe.
However, Duan Jiaxu is unable to accompany Sang Zhi back to Nanwu, so he asks Sang Yan to pick her up at the airport.
When Sang Zhi sees her brother waiting for her, she is surprised, as she initially assumes he would refuse and simply tell her to take a taxi instead.
With his usual lazy and slightly arrogant attitude, Sang Yan explains that Duan Jiaxu has been calling him repeatedly since the morning. Eventually, he gives in to his friend’s request and agrees to help. He also mentions one of Duan Jiaxu’s pranks.
Duan Jiaxu had sent a food delivery that morning. However, he deliberately left a message for the courier, pretending to be Sang Yan’s girlfriend:
“My boyfriend has had a fever and hasn’t been reachable for three days. I’m out of town and cannot come back. Please make sure he wakes up to eat. Thank you.”
Annoyed, Sang Yan says that his girlfriend—whom he jokingly calls Sang Zhi’s “sister-in-law”—received the package and read the message. At that time, Sang Zhi still does not know who Sang Yan’s girlfriend is. She, Duan Jiaxu, and Sang Yan’s friends only know that he often boasts about a woman who keeps chasing him.
This prank also appears in The First Frost novel. Although the motivation is not explicitly explained, it is widely interpreted as a form of payback, as Sang Yan often boasts about being pursued before eventually accepting the relationship.
However, Sang Zhi knows that Sang Yan and Wen Yifan had previously lived in the same apartment. Because of this, she asks whether Wen Yifan still lives there. If so, she wonders whether it would feel awkward for them to run into each other.
Sang Yan then decides to take Sang Zhi to his apartment first, seemingly wanting her to explain the situation to his girlfriend. Sang Zhi refuses at first because she does not know his girlfriend, but eventually agrees.
When she rings the doorbell, Wen Yifan opens the door.
The situation turns comedic when Sang Zhi enters and asks Wen Yifan to call Sang Yan’s girlfriend out. Wen Yifan, casually watching TV while eating her delivered meal, calmly replies, “I’m the girlfriend.”
Sang Zhi is immediately stunned. After noticing the note on the delivery package, she asks whether Wen Yifan is angry at Sang Yan because of the message.
“No, I already ate it,” she replies.
Sang Zhi then says she initially thought Wen Yifan had misunderstood the situation and believed Sang Yan was cheating.
“Oh, so he’s cheating?” Wen Yifan responds.
“I thought he wrote that because he was worried he might not wake up in time to receive the delivery,” she adds.
Eventually, Sang Zhi explains that the message was actually written by Duan Jiaxu. When Sang Yan enters the place, he and Wen Yifan are talking in the kitchen. Sang Zhi then moves to the living room and texts Duan Jiaxu, asking whether he knows who Sang Yan’s girlfriend is.
“He has never mentioned it. Why?” the man replies.
“An extremely beautiful older sister,” Sang Zhi answers, before explaining the situation.
Duan Jiaxu then asks, “That beautiful?”
Reading his reply, Sang Zhi becomes self-conscious and asks, “Why are you so curious?”
Feeling slightly embarrassed, she quickly adds, “Of course, I’m a little prettier.”
Later, Wen Yifan takes Sang Zhi home. During their conversation, they talk about Duan Jiaxu. Apparently, Sang Yan had previously mentioned his sister’s relationship to his friend.
Sang Zhi is touched by Wen Yifan’s support, as it is the first time she has encountered someone who responds positively to her relationship without focusing on the age gap with Duan Jiaxu.
However, Wen Yifan then says, “Before this, your brother showed me a photo of your boyfriend. He is very handsome. Compared to him, your brother looks…”
She suddenly realizes she is commenting on Sang Yan’s appearance in front of his younger sister and quickly corrects herself.
“He… is okay.”
In The First Frost novel, Duan Jiaxu only appears in an extra chapter, although his name is frequently mentioned throughout the story. At one point, there is even a rumor that Sang Yan and Duan Jiaxu were romantically involved during college.

When Wen Yifan hears this rumor and observes how Sang Yan speaks to Duan Jiaxu on the phone, she becomes slightly jealous and subconsciously sees Duan Jiaxu as a romantic rival.
Ironically, after finally seeing a photo of Sang Zhi’s boyfriend, she openly praises his looks in front of Sang Yan, which makes him jealous.
Later, Wen Yifan also praises his appearance in front of Sang Zhi. Unfortunately, these humorous interactions among the four characters were not included in the drama adaptation of Hidden Love.
Several other parts of the novel were also changed or removed in the drama version. For fans who have only watched the series, reading the novel offers a richer and more complete experience.
