What is official is that Youku announced Farewell Letter on September 16, 2026, as part of its 2027 lineup, listing Zhao Lusi as both director and lead actress. The drama is adapted from a novel by German author Kerstin Gier. Zhao Lusi herself acquired the adaptation rights.

According to reports, Kong Lin and Yue Yang will play the biological parents of Zhao Lusi’s character. The two previously played the fake parents of Zhao Lusi’s character in Love’s Ambition, a couple she hired to deceive her husband’s family.
Li Meng, known for playing Zhao Xingtang in Against the Current (兰香如故), is reportedly likely to play the older sister of Zhao Lusi’s character in Farewell Letter. In Against the Current, Zhao Xingtang is an eccentric antagonist and the ex-wife of Lin Jinqi, the character played by Liu Xueyi. Her subtle acting in that role drew viewers’ attention.
Hu Yixuan is also said to have joined. She recently appeared as a female supporting character in How Dare You!? (成何体统) and Irreplaceable (无可替代). In Irreplaceable, she plays the wealthy best friend of Zhao Jinmai’s character.
Chinese American actress Vivian Wu, who appeared in The Last Emperor and Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace (如懿传), is also reportedly joining the drama. Her role has not been made clear. Zhao Lusi’s close friend Wei Xiao, who has worked with her on The Romance of Tiger and Rose (传闻中的陈芊芊), Hidden Love, and Love’s Ambition, is said to play one of the female supporting characters. Her specific role awaits an official announcement.
Reports had also circulated that the male lead would be Cheng Lei. That was later denied by an entertainment industry gossip account, which said the story centers on the female lead, and that any male characters would all be supporting roles.
On the production side, the drama is reportedly being made with the production team behind Hidden Love and the screenwriter of Are You The One (柳舟记). This information has also not been confirmed by the production team.
Farewell Letter follows Zhao Lusi’s first project as a producer, the short drama Sonder·Wo Jiu Bu Shi NPC (Sonder·我就不是NPC) — Sonder: I’m Not an NPC, which began airing on Douyin earlier this month. Zhao Lusi does not appear in the cast of that drama. The title is one of nine projects whose rights she announced in August. According to reports, netizens criticized the short drama for a plot they found messy and acting they found stiff. Its viewership and popularity were reportedly low compared with the attention it drew at the start.
According to the synopsis in circulation, Zhao Lusi plays a 30-year-old single writer who is reportedly named Geli. The character has lost both her job and her boyfriend. She decides to end her life and first writes 13 sharply worded farewell letters to family and friends. Her attempt fails after an accidental affair. She then has to deal with the uproar the letters cause. The story is adapted from a novel by Kerstin Gier, titled 13 Feng Zisha Gaobie Xin (13封自杀告别信) in Chinese.
