LayarHijau— The fantasy drama Veil of Shadows has aired its final episode, bringing an emotional close to an epic journey of humans, dragons, and dark ancient forces. Blending xuanhuan elements with high-stakes storytelling, the series follows four central characters—Lu Wuyi, Wu Wangyan, Wu Shiguang, and Ji Ling—as they confront the ancient demon Jiuying. Starring Ju Jingyi and Chen Duling as sisters bound by a tragic fate, alongside Joseph Zeng and Tian Jiarui, the drama was widely expected to follow the director Edward Guo’s usual pattern of tragic endings.

⚠️ SPOILER WARNING: THE FOLLOWING CONTAINS DETAILS FROM THE FINALE

The final conflict escalates when Lu Wuyi, played by Ju Jingyi, becomes fully consumed by the last remaining fragment of Jiuying. In order to save her sister from total darkness, Wu Wangyan, played by Chen Duling, makes the ultimate sacrifice by sealing the evil force within an ice pillar at the cost of her own life. Her farewell scene—handing over a vow bracelet to Wu Shiguang before freezing in a blizzard—becomes one of the most heartbreaking moments of the series.

In her final moments, Wu Wangyan tearfully tells Wu Shiguang, who arrives too late to save her, “If there is another life, I will definitely find you.” As the last sacred dragon, Wu Shiguang is left in silence, grieving the loss of his beloved. The scene sparked strong reactions from viewers who initially believed the story would end in permanent tragedy for the main timeline.

However, the narrative takes an unexpected turn thanks to Ji Ling, played by Tian Jiarui. Realizing the Jiuying fragment inside Lu Wuyi will remain a future threat, Ji Ling uses his ability to reverse time to a point before the fragment fully develops. He eliminates the threat early and transports Lu Wuyi through a dimensional gate into another world. In this new reality, the two live peacefully as ordinary people, free from the burdens of destiny that once defined them.

Although Wu Wangyan’s sacrifice had already occurred in the original timeline, Ji Ling’s time manipulation effectively creates a revised reality where it is no longer necessary. In this new timeline, Wu Shiguang eventually reunites with Wu Wangyan in the future. She no longer retains memories of their past, but their immediate emotional connection suggests a new beginning. The unexpectedly hopeful ending marks a rare departure for director Edward Guo, who is better known for tragic finales.

Despite its satisfying conclusion, Veil of Shadows faced production challenges along the way. Originally planned for 40 episodes, the series was reduced to just 29, resulting in rushed pacing in several romance subplots. Additionally, contract disputes involving Ju Jingyi reportedly affected advertiser confidence during production. Even so, the drama still managed to compete strongly in online discussions alongside titles such as Love Beyond the Grave and Fated Hearts.
