The Mystic Nine Season 2 Went Through Several Title Changes in China Before Its Official Release as Mystic Nine 2026 — Here’s Why

LayarHijau – The long-awaited sequel to the Chinese drama The Mystic Nine has finally premiered after roughly 10 years. However, the project went through several title changes during development before officially launching in China under the name 九门 (Nine Gates).

The drama was previously widely known as The Mystic Nine Season 2. At one point, the project was also promoted under the title The Mystic Nine Against the Coming Storm. Upon its official release in China, however, it adopted the title 九门 (Nine Gates), known as Sembilan Klan (Nine Gates) in the Indonesian version.

For international audiences, the drama is known as Mystic Nine and Mystic Nine 2026. The latter title helps distinguish the new series from The Mystic Nine, which is the international title of the first installment that premiered in 2016.

The changes have raised questions about why the sequel did not retain the original The Mystic Nine name or simply use a title such as The Mystic Nine 2, as it had commonly been referred to during its development.

According to a report by Hong Kong 01, the title change was not prompted by the story itself or censorship issues. Instead, it was linked to IP rights and a change in the platform handling the project.

The original The Mystic Nine, which aired in 2016, was released exclusively through iQIYI. After the copyright cooperation period between author Nanpai Sanshu, whose real name is Xu Lei, and the previous partner ended, rights related to the sequel were subsequently acquired by Youku.

However, the original The Mystic Nine brand and related rights remained associated with the previous platform. As a result, the sequel ultimately adopted 九门 (Nine Gates) as a new identity when it officially launched.

The removal of the character 老 (lao) from the original Chinese title 老九门 was therefore more than a simple name change. Using 九门 gave the new production a distinct commercial identity from the 2016 series and could also help reduce potential disputes surrounding the use of the original title and related brand assets.

The title change also came amid Nanpai Sanshu’s broader efforts to consolidate rights surrounding the Daomu Biji (The Grave Robbers’ Chronicles) IP. In the past, rights to different parts of the franchise were distributed among multiple parties, resulting in changes to production teams and casts across various adaptations.

In recent years, Nanpai Sanshu, through Nanpai Entertainment, has sought to strengthen its control over the core IP. The effort forms part of a broader strategy to expand its fictional universe, including the development of the Nine Gates concept.

The production of Sembilan Klan (九门/Nine Gates) is reportedly backed by an investment of around 360 million yuan, equivalent to approximately US$50 million. The scale of the investment makes the series more than simply a follow-up to a popular drama from a decade ago; it is also an important project in the renewed development of the IP.

The decision to use 九门 (Nine Gates) can therefore be viewed as part of an effort to establish a new identity while expanding the story’s universe. Although closely connected to The Mystic Nine, the new production is not being positioned simply as a repeat of the original series.

Story-wise, Sembilan Klan expands the timeline to cover the period from 1930 to 1941, further developing the world introduced in The Mystic Nine with a broader historical setting and new conflicts.

William Chan returns as Zhang Qishan after roughly 10 years. His return serves as one of the strongest links between the first series and the new production, with Zhang Qishan remaining an important character in the continuation of the story.

Joseph Zeng, meanwhile, joins the main cast in a new role as Wu Laogou. The addition of new actors means the cast of the latest series is not identical to that of The Mystic Nine.

Several major stars from the original series, including Zhang Yixing and Zhao Liying, do not fully return for the new production. The changes in the cast inevitably create room for comparisons with the 2016 series, particularly because The Mystic Nine featured a highly recognizable ensemble when it premiered.

The new title also creates a clearer distinction between the two productions. Viewers can still recognize its connection to The Mystic Nine, while the latest series establishes its own identity through the title 九门 (Nine Gates).

In short, the title history can be traced from The Mystic Nine Season 2, the name commonly used for the sequel during its development, to The Mystic Nine Against the Coming Storm, before the project ultimately adopted 九门 (Nine Gates) for its official release in China.

For Indonesian audiences, the title is known as Sembilan Klan (Nine Gates), while internationally the series is marketed as Mystic Nine and Mystic Nine 2026. Meanwhile, The Mystic Nine remains the international title of the first series released in 2016.

The multiple title changes therefore do not indicate that the latest project is unrelated to The Mystic Nine. Instead, they reflect an effort to give the sequel a new identity amid IP rights considerations, a change of platform and Nanpai Sanshu’s broader strategy to further develop its fictional universe.

After roughly a decade, the story introduced in The Mystic Nine has now returned through Mystic Nine 2026, officially titled 九门 (Nine Gates) in China and known as Sembilan Klan (Nine Gates) in the Indonesian version.
