Beyond the Tide Scores 62.15 Million Heat on Day One With a Mature Romance and Career-Driven Story

LayarHijau – Chinese short-form drama Beyond the Tide (雾潮燃欲) has made a strong start following its release, recording 62.15 million heat points on its first day. The drama, starring Wang Yiran and Shi Tong, also ranked No. 1 on the new drama chart and the female-viewer new drama chart.

Directed by Li Shaozhi and produced by Shanchuan Wenhe, Beyond the Tide is adapted from the popular novel Tidal Boundary (潮汐界限). The story combines workplace drama with a restrained romance between two adults, while also exploring female independence and the idea of equality in relationships.

The series follows Wei Xi, a deputy head of a surveying department, and Zhou Yushen, the president of a major corporate group. Their paths cross through work, gradually developing into a relationship shaped by their different positions, personal boundaries, and growing feelings for each other.

Rather than making romance the sole focus, Beyond the Tide runs two storylines in parallel: Wei Xi’s professional journey and her evolving relationship with Zhou Yushen.

A heroine who stands on her own

One of the drama’s defining features is its portrayal of Wei Xi as an independent working woman rather than a heroine who relies on a wealthy or powerful man.

Wei Xi is portrayed as both capable and strong-minded. When she finds herself in an unhealthy relationship, she chooses to walk away. At work, she is also willing to acknowledge her mistakes and take responsibility for them.

Her relationship with Zhou Yushen develops at a measured pace. Although he holds a much higher position professionally, the story does not portray him as someone who uses his power to control her.

Instead, Zhou is characterized as rational and restrained, with a strong sense of boundaries. His feelings for Wei Xi are often conveyed through small gestures, such as holding an umbrella for her during a downpour, returning to keep her company late at night, or quietly helping her when she needs support.

As a result, much of their romantic tension comes from glances, conversations and everyday moments rather than exaggerated conflicts or overly dramatic declarations.

Romance and workplace struggles move side by side

Wei Xi’s profession is an important part of Beyond the Tide. The drama incorporates elements of environmental surveying, including wastewater treatment plant site assessments, extreme-weather risk evaluations, communication between companies and government officials, and redevelopment issues in an old urban district.

These elements give the story conflicts beyond romance. Career development, corporate interests and local community concerns all become part of the characters’ lives.

This approach sets Beyond the Tide apart from many romantic short-form dramas that rely heavily on misunderstandings, rapid twists or the familiar setup of an ordinary woman falling for a wealthy man.

Instead, Wei Xi and Zhou Yushen’s relationship unfolds gradually. Their differences in status create emotional tension, while their feelings are often expressed through actions rather than direct declarations.

Rain, fog and atmosphere shape the visual style

Beyond the Tide also places considerable emphasis on its visual atmosphere. The drama was filmed on location and makes extensive use of rain, fog, water, reflections and nighttime settings.

Workplace scenes use cooler tones to create a professional atmosphere and reinforce Zhou Yushen’s reserved personality.

Romantic scenes, meanwhile, rely on softer lighting, rainy nights and quiet spaces to capture the tension between the two leads.

The production also favors subtle expressions and physical gestures over lengthy emotional dialogue. One highlighted moment shows Zhou Yushen taking Wei Xi back to her hotel and briefly reaching toward her face before stopping himself.

The soundtrack further enhances these scenes, particularly during moments such as their time together in a car, a nighttime farewell and the later stages of their relationship.

Wang Yiran and Shi Tong lead the cast

Wang Yiran and Shi Tong play Wei Xi and Zhou Yushen, respectively. The production emphasized matching the actors to their characters rather than relying solely on star power.

The supporting cast also has its own motivations and story functions. Shen Huai, Wei Xi’s former boyfriend, represents a more self-serving approach to relationships, while her best friend Qi Wan provides consistent support.

Conflicts involving the supporting characters are also not simply driven by conventional villains. Many of the disagreements stem from workplace ambitions, differing views on marriage, family expectations and issues affecting local residents.

Beyond the Tide arrives as Chinese short-form dramas evolve

Beyond the Tide’s early performance is notable as China’s short-form drama industry continues to evolve. Audiences are increasingly looking beyond fast-paced twists and dramatic cliffhangers, with acting, character development, visual quality and emotional realism becoming important parts of a show’s appeal.

Beyond the Tide takes that approach by presenting a slower-burn romance, an independent female lead and a workplace storyline that is closely tied to the characters’ development.

The production also emphasizes real locations and a carefully developed visual style, using rain, fog, reflections and music to build the drama’s atmosphere.

Following its release, Beyond the Tide reached 62.15 million heat points on its first day and took the top spot on both the new drama chart and the female-viewer new drama chart.

By combining a mature romance with a career-focused storyline and a more grounded portrayal of the workplace, Beyond the Tide offers an alternative to the familiar wealthy-man-and-ordinary-woman formula that remains common in Chinese short-form romance dramas.
