The nightmare begins during an intense storm. Instead of simply flooding the neighborhood, the water behaves in an unnatural way, forming tendrils that seal homes from the outside.
The phenomenon affects the entire neighborhood, leaving residents with no way to escape. With no clear explanation for what is happening, theories begin to circulate. Some suspect a government operation, while others wonder whether something extraterrestrial is responsible.
But as the days turn into weeks and the food supply disappears, the family has much more immediate problems to deal with.
Jason finds ways to collect rainwater and catch animals without leaving the house, while Ann turns part of their living space into a makeshift garden. Their children, Ruth and Graham, are forced to grow up in an environment where ordinary childhood routines have been replaced by survival.
The situation eventually becomes so desperate that the family makes an unthinkable sacrifice involving their beloved Golden Retriever, Cassidy. Even after that, they continue to face the possibility of starvation.
Five years pass.
By then, the family has transformed their home into a self-contained survival system. They have learned how to grow food, collect water and protect themselves from whatever exists outside.
But Ruth has also spent those years trying to understand the creatures responsible for their imprisonment.
What is trapping the family in The Last House?
The creatures behind the disaster are mysterious beings from the deep sea. Their appearance evokes Cthulhu, the famous fictional monster created by horror writer H.P. Lovecraft, although the creatures in The Last House are not actually Cthulhu.
Cthulhu is traditionally depicted as a gigantic, tentacled being with features resembling a combination of an octopus, dragon and humanoid creature. Lovecraft introduced the character in his 1926 short story The Call of Cthulhu, and the figure has since become one of the best-known icons of cosmic horror.
In The Last House, the creatures are smaller than the gigantic version of Cthulhu commonly seen in popular culture, but they possess a similarly unsettling appearance. More importantly, they appear to have control over water and rain.
Ruth eventually becomes convinced that the creatures are not extraterrestrials.
She believes they could be ancient marine beings that humanity has mistaken for mythical creatures such as the Kraken or Leviathan. Her theory is based partly on how little of the world’s oceans have actually been explored.
The film also suggests that the creatures may have a connection to humanity’s treatment of the environment.
Rather than simply invading Earth, they may be reclaiming territory that humans have occupied and damaged.
That interpretation is supported by imagery involving pollution and human debris along the coast. The movie never provides a definitive scientific explanation for the creatures, however, leaving their true origin and motives deliberately ambiguous.
There are also indications that the creatures are not simply mindless monsters.
Ruth notices that one of them appears to be attempting to communicate. Jason has a similarly strange encounter when water outside the house seemingly takes the shape of a human hand against the window.
At the same time, the creatures can be extremely dangerous. They contribute to the deaths of people in the neighborhood, and one of them later enters the family’s home and destroys their carefully cultivated crops.
So while Ruth believes they may not be inherently evil, there is no question that humans are in danger around them.
How does The Last House end?
Near the end of the movie, the family gets another encounter with one of the creatures.
This time, they are prepared.
After spending years learning how to survive, Jason and his family turn their home into a defensive stronghold. They set traps and prepare weapons, including harpoons and Molotov cocktails, in an attempt to stop the creature.
Jason eventually manages to trap it.
With the creature at his mercy, he threatens to kill it unless it gives the family a way out. But Ruth intervenes and asks her father to spare it.
Jason listens.
Instead of killing the creature, he releases it.
That decision changes the family’s fate.
The creature appears to communicate with the others, and the family is ultimately allowed to leave the house that has kept them imprisoned for five years.
At the same time, the structure of the house finally begins to collapse. The storm subsides, sunlight breaks through the clouds, and the family emerges into a radically transformed Seattle.
The city is almost completely submerged. The water has risen so dramatically that the Space Needle appears to stand in the middle of an enormous flooded landscape.
The family then finds a boat belonging to a deceased neighbor. They take it and set off across the flooded city.
The boat, originally named “Seas The Day,” is renamed “Cassidy” in memory of the dog whose death helped the family survive their darkest period.
The film closes with the family sailing away toward the horizon.
Although they have finally escaped their five-year confinement, The Last House leaves several questions unanswered. The movie never fully explains where the creatures came from, exactly why they targeted humanity, or what their presence means for the future of the surviving world.
Instead, the ending leaves viewers with the possibility that what initially appeared to be a monster invasion may have been something more complicated: a conflict between humanity and creatures that consider the flooded world their own home.
