LayarHijau – Filipino thriller Uninvited, which arrived on Netflix in 2025, is more than just a fictional revenge story. Starring Vilma Santos, Nadine Lustre, and Aga Muhlach, the film follows a mother who infiltrates a billionaire’s lavish birthday party while posing as a wealthy donor, determined to confront the man she believes is responsible for her daughter’s death.
But is Uninvited based on a true story?

The short answer is not exactly. The film is a work of fiction, but its central premise draws from the real-life story of a mother who took extraordinary risks to track down the people responsible for her daughter’s kidnapping and murder.
The Real-Life Story Behind Uninvited
One of the real-life stories associated with the film’s premise is that of Miriam Rodríguez Martínez, a Mexican mother whose daughter, Karen Alejandra, was kidnapped in 2012.
After her daughter was found dead, Miriam refused to simply accept what had happened. She began investigating the case herself and tracking down people she believed were involved in the kidnapping.
Her determination eventually led her to identify and locate several suspected members of the criminal group responsible. Miriam reportedly went as far as disguising herself and assuming different identities while searching for the people connected to her daughter’s murder.
That extraordinary story of a mother pursuing justice herself became a powerful real-world parallel to the revenge-driven premise at the heart of Uninvited.
However, the film does not portray Miriam’s life or case directly. Instead, the filmmakers took the basic idea of a grieving mother seeking revenge and transformed it into an original thriller set in the Philippines.
Vilma Santos’ Character Is Not Miriam Rodríguez
In Uninvited, Vilma Santos plays Lilia Capistrano, a mother who has lost her daughter, Lily.
Lilia eventually adopts another identity and infiltrates a lavish birthday celebration hosted by Guilly Vega, a wealthy and influential man played by Aga Muhlach. She believes Guilly is responsible for what happened to her daughter and arrives at his party with a very different purpose from the other guests.
What follows is a revenge thriller that unfolds largely over the course of one night.
The character of Lilia is therefore not a direct fictionalized version of Miriam Rodríguez. Instead, the film uses the emotional core of Miriam’s story — a mother refusing to stop after losing her daughter — as inspiration for its own fictional narrative.
The Story Actually Started With Vilma Santos
Interestingly, the idea for Uninvited did not begin as a straightforward true-crime adaptation.
Director Dan Villegas revealed that Vilma Santos initially wanted to make a film that took place within a 24-hour period. Villegas and producer Antoinette Jadaone then developed the basic concept of a woman seeking revenge against a powerful figure at a party.
Screenwriter Dodo Dayao subsequently expanded that premise and turned it into the dark thriller that became Uninvited.
This distinction is important because it explains why Uninvited should not be described as a biographical film about Miriam Rodríguez or as a direct retelling of her case.
The filmmakers took inspiration from real-life themes and stories but built their own characters, setting and plot around them.
What About the Philippine Cases That Fans Mentioned?
Uninvited also prompted speculation among Filipino viewers about possible similarities to real criminal cases in the Philippines.
Some viewers compared elements of the film to the notorious 1993 case involving Eileen Sarmenta and Allan Gomez. Sarmenta was abducted and sexually assaulted before she was murdered, while Gomez was also killed. The case involved then-Calauan Mayor Antonio Sanchez and became one of the Philippines’ most infamous criminal cases.
Because Uninvited also involves a young woman who becomes a victim of sexual violence and murder, along with a powerful man at the center of the story, some viewers saw parallels between the film and the Sarmenta-Gomez case.
However, those similarities do not make Uninvited a direct adaptation of that case. There is no solid basis for presenting the movie as a dramatization of Sarmenta’s murder.
The stronger connection discussed in relation to the film’s premise is the story of Miriam Rodríguez and her pursuit of the people responsible for her daughter’s death.
When Was Uninvited Released?
Uninvited was originally released in the Philippines as one of the official entries at the 50th Metro Manila Film Festival in December 2024. It was directed by Dan Villegas and written by Dodo Dayao, with Vilma Santos, Aga Muhlach, and Nadine Lustre leading the cast.
Netflix later added the film to its catalog in 2025, where it is listed as a Filipino thriller and social-issue drama.
So, if you are watching Uninvited on Netflix and wondering whether the events actually happened, the most accurate answer is: the movie is fictional, but its revenge premise was inspired by real-life stories of mothers seeking justice after their daughters were killed.
That makes the film’s central idea even more unsettling: the story may be fictional, but the desperation behind it comes from something that has happened in real life.
