Synopsis
As a professional billiards player, Yin Guo has already made a name for herself in the sport. When she receives an invitation to compete in a tournament in Helsinki, Finland, she eagerly accepts. Little does she know that what happens next will change her life forever.
Before Yin Guo can even begin preparing for the upcoming competition, an unexpected snowstorm leaves her stranded with Lin Yiyang. The two feel an instant connection, and with the help of her cousin, Yin Guo continues to get to know Yi Yang even after the storm passes. However, she has no idea that he has a long history in professional billiards. A true prodigy, Yi Yang once enjoyed the spotlight as a rising star in the sport, but those days are long behind him.

Amidst a Snowstorm of Love delivers a sweet romance with strong chemistry between Lin Yiyang and Yin Guo, complemented by a convincing portrayal of the billiards world, a fast-paced storyline, and moving character development. However, Lin Yiyang's aggressive physical advances sometimes feel inconsistent with his introverted personality, while the billiards competitions lack meaningful challenges and memorable opponents.

Female viewers who love Chinese romance dramas are once again treated to a story featuring the kind of dream man many would fall for. Who could resist someone like Lin Yiyang (Wu Lei)? He is tall, handsome, caring, and more than willing to spoil the woman he loves. Even better, his attention remains firmly focused on Yin Guo (Zhao Jinmai), the woman who captures his heart.
Yin Guo is equally easy to root for. She is talented, accomplished, and wholeheartedly supportive of her partner, both in his career and financially. Her personality complements Lin Yiyang’s beautifully, making their relationship feel engaging and giving their chemistry a distinctive appeal compared with similar romance dramas.
In the original novel, Lin Yiyang and Yin Guo’s love story takes place in the United States. The drama, however, moves the setting to Finland. While I do not know the exact reason behind this change, I think the creative team made an excellent choice. Finland provides a refreshing backdrop, especially since many viewers may be less familiar with the country.
The drama also does a convincing job of portraying its two leads as professional billiards players. Billiards is far more than a decorative element in their love story. Viewers are introduced to the sport’s different disciplines, including snooker, eight-ball, and nine-ball, while gaining an appreciation for the athletes’ dedication to promoting and developing the sport. At the same time, the drama strikes a good balance, providing enough detail to make the sport engaging without overwhelming viewers with technical jargon.
Like other dramas adapted from Mo Bao Fei Bao’s novels, this story avoids the cheap, sensational conflicts often found in romance dramas. Even characters who initially appear to be antagonists turn out to be more complex than expected, rather than simply serving as obstacles to the main couple.
Beyond the compelling relationship between Lin Yiyang and Yin Guo, Lin Yiyang’s interactions with other characters, including Meng Xiaodong (Wang Xiyue) and Jiang Yang (Chen Jingke), are also worth watching. Lin Yiyang and Meng Xiaodong may be rivals, but their relationship is refreshingly free of the usual hatred and hostility. In fact, Meng Xiaodong even supports Lin Yiyang’s romance with his younger cousin.
The story moves at a brisk pace, taking viewers through a range of emotions that feel relatable to everyday life. I was particularly moved by Lin Yiyang’s struggle to survive after growing up as an orphan, as well as his relationship with his mentor. These elements add emotional depth to a character who might otherwise have been portrayed simply as a talented athlete with a complicated past.
Another touching aspect is the way Yin Guo inspires Lin Yiyang to confront his deepest doubts and find the courage to pursue his dreams again. Through his journey, the drama offers meaningful reflections on personal growth. Lin Yiyang begins as a stubborn, arrogant young man but gradually matures into someone more grounded and emotionally mature.
Watching this drama, I felt as though I was growing alongside Lin Yiyang. I laughed and cried with him, shared in the joy of his romantic moments with Yin Guo, and felt the nervous anticipation surrounding the characters’ billiards matches. The story makes it easy to become emotionally invested in both their relationship and their individual journeys.
Unfortunately, one aspect of the drama did not work as well for me: Lin Yiyang’s sexually assertive behavior. Even before the couple officially gets together, he is already trying to kiss Yin Guo. Their physical push-and-pull continues from the early episodes almost until the end. Physical intimacy is certainly a natural part of a romance drama, but I do not believe that having more kissing scenes automatically makes a love story better.
Some viewers may not mind this at all, but I found this behavior somewhat inconsistent with Lin Yiyang’s introverted personality. His persistent physical advances occasionally felt at odds with the character the drama otherwise presents.
Another weakness is the lack of meaningful conflict during the billiards competitions. Lin Yiyang and Yin Guo rarely face challenges that make their matches feel genuinely difficult. Although some games are presented with considerable tension, the opponents they encounter are largely forgettable. As a result, the competitive side of the story lacks the memorable rivals and formidable obstacles that could have made the sporting drama even more compelling.
If you are looking for a drama that sweeps you up in a beautiful romance while exploring the determination to pursue one’s dreams and build a career, Amidst a Snowstorm of Love is well worth considering. Just be prepared for the considerable amount of physical intimacy between the two leads. If that is not a concern for you, this drama could be an enjoyable choice.
