LayarHijau – Hou Minghao has become a hot topic after two costume dramas starring him aired almost simultaneously. The xianxia drama The Unclouded Soul (逍遙) and the intrigue drama Glory (玉茗茶骨) premiered just two days apart, on December 27 and 29, 2025. This rare situation led netizens to joke that Hou Minghao is “competing against himself,” with many dubbing him “the busiest costume drama actor of the year.”

Hou Minghao first rose to wider recognition through the web drama Cambrian Period. Since stepping up as a leading man, his acting growth has continued to draw attention. The near-simultaneous release of two dramas with sharply contrasting genres and characters has sparked lively discussion, ranging from concerns about audience fatigue to curiosity over how convincingly he can switch between vastly different roles.

In The Unclouded Soul, Hou Minghao plays Hong Ye, a powerful demon king who carries centuries-old resentment. He becomes entangled in a tragic, three-lifetime romance with the character portrayed by Tan Songyun. Unlike the typically cold and aloof xianxia archetype, Hou Minghao’s demon king is gentle, warm, and approachable. Many viewers found this portrayal refreshing, though some felt his screen presence and emotional depth still have room to grow.

In stark contrast, Glory sees Hou Minghao transform into Lu Jianglai, the top graduate of the imperial civil service examination who appears mild-mannered on the surface but is in fact deeply calculating. His promising career collapses when he is unexpectedly dragged into an old case involving the murder of a nobleman’s wife. From a rising star in officialdom, Lu Jianglai plunges to the lowest point of his life and narrowly escapes death, only to be saved by Rong Shanbao, the daughter of a tea magnate, played by Guli Nazha.

Their story develops into a marriage that begins out of necessity, set against the backdrop of tea trade rivalries and power struggles. To survive, Lu Jianglai pretends to be weak and even feigns memory loss to deceive those around him. Behind his obedient and fragile façade, however, he quietly plots his revenge. His fall from top examination graduate to a lowly horse groom highlights the striking contrast within the character.

As a result, Lu Jianglai has been dubbed by netizens as the “male version of Wei Yingluo.” Wei Yingluo is the female lead of the hit drama Story of Yanxi Palace, known for appearing naïve and compliant on the surface while actually being intelligent, patient, and highly strategic. She often pretends to give in, lulling her enemies into a false sense of security before striking back with carefully calculated moves. The comparison arose because Lu Jianglai employs a similar survival strategy, disguising weakness while secretly controlling the situation.

The fact that two Hou Minghao dramas aired within such a short span has raised concerns about split promotions and possible viewer fatigue. Nevertheless, many fans see it as proof of his versatility as an actor. Comments like “the only one who can defeat Hou Minghao is Hou Minghao himself,” “from demon king straight to top scholar,” and “seamless character switching” have flooded social media.

With two major roles effectively competing in the same window, the end of 2025 marks a crucial moment for Hou Minghao. For some viewers, it poses a risk; for others, it is a chance to see just how far he can go in embodying dramatically different characters without losing his appeal.
