According to reports from Chinese media, Shine on Me follows Nie Xiguang (Zhao Jinmai), a young woman from a wealthy family who chooses to hide her background and start her career from the lowest level at her father’s company. During her university years, she once harbored unrequited feelings for a talented man named Zhuang Xu. After graduation, her life takes a turn when she encounters Lin Yusen (Song Weilong), a newly appointed vice president known for his strict and aloof demeanor.
A misunderstanding initially leads Lin Yusen to treat Nie Xiguang harshly. Over time, however, he becomes moved by her resilience and sincerity. Meanwhile, through Lin Yusen’s honest and determined pursuit, Nie Xiguang gradually comes to understand the kind of love she truly wants. Their relationship evolves from constant friction into a romance built on mutual support and understanding.
One of the drama’s key strengths lies in its portrayal of a mature and healthy relationship. Lin Yusen is shown offering advice when Nie Xiguang feels lost, without making decisions on her behalf. In turn, Nie Xiguang provides warmth and comfort when Lin Yusen is emotionally low, while respecting personal boundaries. Both characters are willing to reveal their vulnerabilities and become each other’s steady support. This concept of “clear-minded love” resonates with many young viewers, reflecting a desire for relationships that foster growth rather than emotional exhaustion.
At the same time, the drama’s visual presentation has sparked mixed reactions. Zhao Jinmai’s styling, despite featuring several high-end fashion brands, was perceived by some viewers as more mature and understated than what they expected from a modern romance drama. However, many fans argue that this approach highlights Nie Xiguang’s grounded and realistic character. Zhao Jinmai and Song Weilong’s visual chemistry is also widely regarded as strong, remaining one of Shine on Me’s most notable attractions.
With its record-breaking performance and ongoing discussion, Shine on Me is expected to remain one of the most closely watched urban romance dramas of the year.
