According to Chinese entertainment media, a gossip outlet filmed Zhang Ming’en and his girlfriend, who is not a public figure, in a dispute on the street. In the footage, the woman appears highly emotional and repeatedly hits herself. She is then seen appearing to kneel while Zhang Ming’en stands beside her. The argument continues, and at one point she grabs Zhang Ming’en by the collar in obvious distress.
The topic “Zhang Ming’en’s girlfriend kneels” briefly rose to the top of Weibo’s trending list. Zhang Ming’en then posted the following statement:
“First, I apologize for parking illegally. I’m sorry. I’ll reflect on it and won’t do it again. Second, this is a bit embarrassing to say, but it started because the photo I took of her was too ugly, and I wouldn’t admit it, so we argued. Let me clarify here: she did not kneel. I wanted to go home, so she sat on the ground and acted spoiled and stubborn. She ‘hit’ me because I kept talking back, and I deserved it… So the interpretation going around about kneeling is untrue. Taking photos of your girlfriend is truly a lifelong lesson for a man. I’m sorry this small matter got caught on camera. I’ll learn more photography skills from now on. Finally, I apologize for using public resources.”
Some Weibo users doubted the explanation, saying the incident in the video looked far more serious than simply acting spoiled. Others noted that a clip does not necessarily show the whole picture. According to reports, Zhang Ming’en’s girlfriend has not responded publicly.
Zhang Ming’en was most recently seen in the costume drama Zhan Zhao Adventures (雨霖铃), which aired in 2026 on Youku and CCTV-8. The drama has 37 episodes.
Its lead character, Zhan Zhao, an imperial guard who investigates an old case, is played by Yang Yang.
Zhang Ming’en plays Shao Jizu, one of the drama’s antagonists. Shao Jizu is the fiancé of Huo Linglong, the daughter of the owner of Linglong Manor, who is played by Zhang Ruonan.
Past romances resurface on Weibo
As the news spread, Weibo users also brought up Zhang Ming’en’s past romantic history. The following is a summary reported by several Chinese media outlets. All of it comes from older reports and online discussion, and some of it consists of one-sided claims.
Xu Lu is a Chinese actress who was previously in a relationship with Zhang Ming’en. The two were reportedly seen holding hands in February 2019. They announced their relationship on Aug. 6, 2019, and appeared together on a romance reality show.
On June 6, 2020, Zhang Ming’en wrote that he and Xu Lu had broken up at the end of 2019. Chinese netizens questioned that statement because the two still appeared as a couple in a magazine shoot in February 2020. According to Xu Lu’s staff, she only unfollowed Zhang Ming’en’s account and deleted photos of them together after footage of them in a parking lot surfaced in June 2020. In August 2022, Zhang Ming’en’s studio shared chat records that it said showed the breakup took place in early 2020, and stated that he did not cheat. To date, the two sides have never issued a joint statement on the breakup.
The second woman named is actress Hu Bingqing, Zhang Ming’en’s co-star in a drama filmed from April to June 2020. At the time, the two were rumored to be close after footage of them in a parking lot circulated on June 6, 2020. Zhang Ming’en denied having a relationship with her.
On June 23, 2020, Hu Bingqing shared audio recordings and screenshots of conversations. According to the recordings, Zhang Ming’en suggested that she write that Xu Lu had cyberbullied her, on the grounds that “if two women attack each other, the matter will be over.” Hu Bingqing did not follow his suggestion. She stated that she did not accept Zhang Ming’en’s confession of love and was not the other woman. Xu Lu did not respond publicly. According to Chinese media, Zhang Ming’en has not responded to the renewed discussion of these old events.
