Sun Qian grew increasingly emotional as she listened to the fans’ stories. Her eyes gradually welled up with tears, and she appeared to struggle to hold them back while trying to keep her composure.
For Sun Qian, saying goodbye to Shang Zhi Tao was particularly difficult. In a previous interview, she described The Early Spring as the drama she had worked on with the strongest “heartbreak feeling.”
Throughout filming, Sun Qian immersed herself deeply in Shang Zhi Tao’s life. She followed the character’s journey from a young professional still finding her footing to a woman capable of standing on her own, experiencing her struggles at work, emotional ups and downs, and the difficult choices she had to make along the way.
On stage, Sun Qian shared an emotional message with the audience while holding back tears.
“I hope everyone can become their own hero, love the people you love, and do the things you love.”
Her words made the atmosphere even more emotional. Sun Qian also revealed that Shang Zhi Tao’s experience of leaving her hometown and moving to Beijing to pursue her dreams closely mirrors her own journey.
Sun Qian was born in Harbin before moving to Beijing to pursue her dreams. After spending months deeply immersed in the role, she developed a strong emotional connection with Shang Zhi Tao, making it particularly difficult to say goodbye to the character after filming wrapped.
Jing Boran Revisits the Iconic “Ice Sculpture” Line
As Sun Qian became emotional, Jing Boran also struggled to hide his feelings. His eyes appeared reddened as he took part in the fan letter segment.
When the host asked Jing Boran if he had anything he wanted to say to the audience, he chose to quote one of Luan Nian’s lines from the drama:
“We won’t end. If we really have to end, then we’ll become ice sculptures together.”
The line comes from an iconic scene in which Shang Zhi Tao suggests breaking up with Luan Nian. By repeating the line at the farewell event, Jing Boran effectively brought Luan Nian and Shang Zhi Tao’s relationship back to life in front of the fans.
Jing Boran then called out, “We’ll never part,” as a final message to the fans who had supported the drama.
Many fans interpreted the moment as Luan Nian’s way of saying goodbye to Shang Zhi Tao, making it one of the most emotional moments of the farewell event.
Jing Boran and Sun Qian Secretly Hold Hands
Not every moment at the event was emotional. Jing Boran and Sun Qian also sent fans into a frenzy when they recreated one of The Early Spring’s most memorable scenes.
While waiting backstage, the two were spotted quietly holding hands. Jing Boran stood with his back to Sun Qian, placing one hand behind his back with his palm facing her.
Sun Qian then slowly reached forward and took his hand.
The interaction recreated the scene in which Luan Nian and Shang Zhi Tao secretly hold hands in a parking garage.
After holding hands, the two quickly pulled away, appearing shy and slightly embarrassed. The brief interaction became one of the most talked-about moments of the event.
The contrast between Luan Nian and Shang Zhi Tao’s restrained romantic tension in the drama and Jing Boran and Sun Qian’s shy reaction on stage prompted fans to praise their chemistry.
Sun Qian Wins Over Skeptical Fans as Shang Zhi Tao
Sun Qian’s performance as Shang Zhi Tao was also one of the most closely watched aspects of The Early Spring.
When she was first announced for the role, some fans of the original novel questioned whether she was a good fit for the character, including concerns about her appearance and her height of 172 centimeters.
However, those doubts gradually faded after the drama premiered. Sun Qian earned praise for her nuanced emotional performance and convincing portrayal of Shang Zhi Tao’s growth throughout the story.
Her teary-eyed appearance at the farewell event further showed how deeply she had become attached to the character after spending months portraying her.
The Early Spring is adapted from the novel of the same name by author Guniang Bie Ku (姑娘別哭, “Girl, Don’t Cry”). The drama aired simultaneously on Youku and Netflix.
During its run, The Early Spring delivered strong results, becoming the fastest modern romance drama on Youku in 2026 to reach the 10,000 popularity milestone. It also remained at No. 2 on Netflix’s Global Top 10 for Non-English TV for two consecutive weeks.
