After refusing to give up and changing his once cold and sharp-tongued ways, Luan Nian manages to repair their relationship. In Episode 24, he makes a romantic proposal to Shang Zhi Tao in front of their family and close friends.
Their dog, Luke, also appears with heart-shaped balloons as Luan Nian pops the question. Shang Zhi Tao accepts, and the two share a romantic kiss, bringing the drama to a happy ending.
However, the drama’s ending is quite different from the original novel by Chinese author Gu Niang Bie Ku (姑娘别哭). While the drama concludes with their engagement, the novel continues well beyond that point and explores their life together after marriage.
Chinese readers have pointed out three major scenes and storylines from the novel that were cut from the drama, including some of the moments they were most eager to see.
1. The Novel Shows Their Life as a Married Couple and Parents
The drama ends with Luan Nian and Shang Zhi Tao getting back together and accepting his proposal. Viewers never get to see what happens after they officially become husband and wife.
The novel, however, continues their story after marriage. Luan Nian and Shang Zhi Tao eventually have a daughter named Nian Tao.
Having a child brings major changes to Luan Nian, who is known for being extremely particular about cleanliness and having a sharp personality. The novel shows how becoming a father gradually turns him into a much softer and more affectionate man.
It also features numerous scenes from their life as a married couple and parents. All of these moments were left out of the drama, leaving viewers with only the proposal as the final glimpse of their future together.
2. Luan Nian’s Will for Shang Zhi Tao Is Missing
Another important scene omitted from the drama is the part where Luan Nian prepares a will for Shang Zhi Tao.
Once their relationship becomes stable, Luan Nian begins thinking further ahead about their future together, particularly because of their age difference. He prepares a will and tells Shang Zhi Tao about it.
Shang Zhi Tao initially feels uncomfortable because she immediately associates a will with death. Luan Nian, however, gently explains that he wants to make sure she will be protected and able to live well if he is no longer by her side one day.
In the novel, the will represents more than simply preparing for death. It marks another step forward in their relationship, showing that they have reached a stage where they genuinely consider each other’s future and treat one another with greater tenderness.
That emotional development was completely removed from the drama.
3. Shang Zhi Tao’s Emotional Outburst After Sun Yuan Zhu’s Death Is Cut
The third major difference involves the death of Sun Yuan Zhu (Liu Xiaobei), the warm-hearted roommate whose death becomes one of the most painful moments in the story. His death is a major emotional loss in both the novel and the drama.
However, the novel uses the tragedy to further develop the relationship between Luan Nian and Shang Zhi Tao.
After Sun Yuan Zhu’s death, the company gives Shang Zhi Tao time off to recover emotionally. Luan Nian then goes to her apartment to keep her company.
Overwhelmed by grief, Shang Zhi Tao suddenly asks Luan Nian whether he feels even a little happy that Sun Yuan Zhu, the person he disliked the most, is dead.
Her harsh words are an emotional outburst stemming from the complicated feelings she has been carrying. Luan Nian had repeatedly become jealous of Sun Yuan Zhu in the past, while Shang Zhi Tao had never really had an outlet for her own emotions.
Instead of getting angry with her, Luan Nian chooses to understand and comfort her. In the novel, this moment becomes an important sign that their relationship has fundamentally changed.
Ultimately, The Early Spring drama chooses to end Luan Nian and Shang Zhi Tao’s love story with their reconciliation and romantic engagement. The novel, meanwhile, goes much further, showing their married life, the birth of their daughter, Luan Nian’s transformation as a husband and father, and the deeper maturity of their relationship.
For fans of the original novel, the missing material is a significant disappointment, particularly the domestic scenes showing Luan Nian and Shang Zhi Tao building a family and raising their daughter, Nian Tao, together.
