As audiences around the world began watching the latest Spider-Man film, Marvel’s long-kept secret was finally unveiled. Sadie Sink is playing Jean Grey, one of the most recognizable members of the X-Men.
Marvel Studios first announced Sink’s casting in March 2025 but deliberately kept her character under wraps throughout production and the film’s marketing campaign. Spider-Man: Brand New Day also reunites the actress with director Destin Daniel Cretton, nearly a decade after they worked together on The Glass Castle.
For more than a year, online rumors consistently pointed to Jean Grey as Sink’s role. However, the actress repeatedly avoided confirming the speculation in interviews, preserving the surprise until the film’s release. The situation drew comparisons to Andrew Garfield, who famously denied appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home before that film premiered.
Jean Grey Makes a Mysterious Entrance
The movie introduces Jean Grey as a hooded figure with extraordinary telepathic abilities. She is capable of entering people’s minds and shifting her consciousness from one person to another, making her one of the film’s most enigmatic characters.
Initially, she appears to be targeting the Department of Damage Control, leading viewers to believe she may be the story’s primary antagonist. As the plot unfolds, however, it becomes clear that her true objective is finding her missing sister, Sara Grey.
Her psychic powers also provide a deeper look into Peter Parker’s emotional state, offering a new perspective on the hero during one of the story’s defining moments.
A New Beginning for the X-Men
Jean Grey’s debut represents a significant milestone in Marvel Studios’ gradual introduction of mutants into the MCU. The character is portrayed as a teenager, aligning with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige>’s previously stated vision of building a younger generation of X-Men.
Feige has previously explained that Avengers: Secret Wars will lead to a “reset” rather than a traditional reboot, creating a refreshed timeline where the X-Men can take center stage. According to him, future mutant stories will focus on young people struggling with identity, acceptance, and belonging—themes that have long defined the X-Men franchise.
What’s Next for Jean Grey?
The ending of Spider-Man: Brand New Day leaves Jean Grey’s future intentionally open, giving Marvel plenty of room to expand her role in upcoming MCU projects.
Industry reports have suggested that Sadie Sink could return as Jean Grey in Avengers: Secret Wars, which is scheduled for release in 2027. However, Marvel Studios has yet to officially confirm whether the actress will appear in the highly anticipated crossover film.
With Jean Grey now officially part of the MCU, Spider-Man: Brand New Day serves as more than just Peter Parker’s latest adventure—it also marks an important first step toward the arrival of the X-Men in Marvel’s evolving cinematic universe.
