LayarHijau – After years of declining interest in superhero films, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has emerged as a rare bright spot at the Chinese box office. Marvel’s latest blockbuster not only posted an impressive advance ticket sales performance but also maintained strong momentum after its theatrical debut.

Ahead of its release, Spider-Man: Brand New Day generated more than 100 million yuan (about US$14 million) in advance ticket sales. Its midnight screenings also earned over 27 million yuan (about US$3.8 million), outperforming the midnight opening of Spider-Man: Far From Home when it was released in 2019.

The film continued its impressive run after opening in theaters. It collected 210 million yuan (about US$29.3 million) on its first day and reached 390 million yuan (about US$54.4 million) after just two days. Box office tracking platforms are currently projecting a final gross of around 1.6 billion yuan (about US$223 million) in China.

Those numbers stand out at a time when many superhero movies have struggled to attract audiences. The Marvels finished its global run with only about one-fifth of the box office earned by its predecessor. The Flash wrapped up its worldwide theatrical release with around US$278 million, while Kraven the Hunter failed to cross the US$100 million mark globally.

Spider-Man’s Enduring Appeal

According to Sohu Entertainment, one of the biggest reasons behind the film’s success is the lasting popularity of the Spider-Man franchise.

In North America, Spider-Man remains one of the most beloved superheroes. Some fans have even jokingly compared the character’s popularity to Ne Zha’s status in China.

Spider-Man has also built a loyal fan base in China over the years. Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home combined to earn more than 1.8 billion yuan (about US$251 million) at the Chinese box office. Meanwhile, The Amazing Spider-Man surpassed 300 million yuan (about US$42 million) in China when it was released in 2012.

Unlike many other superheroes, Spider-Man has always been portrayed as an ordinary young man facing everyday challenges, making him more relatable to audiences. Tom Holland’s version of Peter Parker, whose journey began in high school, has been especially successful in connecting with younger moviegoers who have followed the character’s growth over multiple films.

An Emotional Story That Still Expands the MCU

Beyond its box office performance, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has also received praise for refocusing on Peter Parker’s emotional journey.

Rather than immediately launching the character into another world-threatening adventure after the heartbreaking ending of the previous film, the new installment explores Peter’s struggle to rebuild his life after losing everything and being forgotten by the world.

At the same time, Marvel continues to expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe without making future storylines feel forced.

The report noted that the appearance of a new Black Widow and the introduction of Jean Grey are naturally woven into the narrative. Their inclusion also serves as an early step toward bringing the X-Men into the MCU while laying the groundwork for Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled to hit theaters later this year.

The success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day may ultimately reinforce a simple truth about the superhero genre: audiences have never grown tired of superheroes themselves. What they have grown tired of are formulaic stories and films that lack genuine emotional depth.
