Zhao Lusi Launches Open Script Call, Taking Creative Control of Her Next Project

Layarhijau – Big news is coming out of China’s entertainment industry. On July 23, Zhao Lusi’s studio dropped a “Quality Content Solicitation Announcement,” throwing the doors wide open to creators across the internet for collaboration opportunities.

This marks a major shift for the A-list actress, who’s now stepping into the project development process with more initiative and transparency than ever before. Instead of waiting for the right offer to land in her lap, she’s going straight to the source to build her own project from the ground up.

According to the announcement, the studio is casting a wide net for original film and TV scripts, story outlines, and both short- and long-form story concepts. They’re especially hunting for female-driven narratives, healing and coming-of-age stories, and warm, grounded realism. Bonus points for original work that’s completely free of copyright disputes.

Two Deal Structures That Actually Reward Writers

Zhao Lusi’s studio is laying out two collaboration tracks. The first is a short-term, single-script deal structured as a straight buyout, with the writer receiving a one-time, full payment upfront. The second is a deeper, long-term co-creation partnership. Under this model, the writer keeps permanent screen credit and also scores a cut of the show’s streaming revenue, plus a share of any future IP spinoffs and merchandising.

Reading between the lines of the announcement, it’s clear Zhao Lusi isn’t just shopping around for a story to fit an existing project. She’s looking to spearhead development herself. In industry terms, this is what’s known as an actor “packaging their own project” – meaning the star or their team actively secures the IP, handpicks the creative team, brokers deals with platforms, and drives the entire development process, all while starring in the lead role and potentially serving as producer too.

In short, the actress is done sitting around waiting to be cast. She’s rolling up her sleeves to bake the perfect pie for herself.

From Behind Closed Doors to the Public Spotlight

Back in the day, when actors packaged their own projects, it was all done quietly – scrambling for resources and assembling teams behind closed doors. But Zhao Lusi is flipping that script entirely, dragging the whole process out into the open.

An open call like this lowers the barrier to entry and widens the playing field. Writers don’t need a Rolodex full of industry connections anymore; if the story is good enough, they’ve got a direct line to the core creative team. In today’s entertainment landscape, that kind of openness is a breath of fresh air.

Why Are Actors Packaging Their Own Projects Now?

Let’s zoom out for a second – actors taking the reins on their own projects isn’t exactly new territory.

During the golden era of film and TV, plenty of top-tier stars quietly pivoted into becoming power players behind the camera. Li Bingbing and her sister launched Heson Media. Chen Kun and Zhou Xun co-founded Dongshen Future. Yang Mi was deeply tied to Jiaying Media. These are the classic examples.

They built their own companies or dove headfirst into management labels, leveraging their star power and industry connections to greenlight projects. They weren’t just crafting roles tailored to themselves – they were churning out the next generation of talent too. The logic was simple: when you’ve got the clout and the box office draw, why wait around for the perfect script when you can build the perfect project yourself?

But times have changed. As the industry as a whole grapples with a drought of quality content and slimmer odds of landing a hit, the old playbook of throwing money around and stacking up big IP adaptations is falling flat. Streaming platforms and production companies are routinely missing the mark. Even A-listers are finding themselves stuck in the frustrating spot of “no good scripts to choose from” or “the shows I’m in aren’t getting watched.”

Under these circumstances, actors going public to hunt for quality content isn’t just a trend – it’s practically inevitable. It’s no longer just a power move for the top tier; it’s becoming a smart, proactive strategy for artists to keep their creative fires burning and carve out a unique lane for themselves.

Zhao Lusi’s open call is a textbook example of this turning point in action.

Golden Opportunities, Real-World Challenges

The upside of an open script call is pretty clear-cut. It tears down the industry’s velvet ropes, giving buried original voices a real shot at breaking through. A flood of diverse submissions could bring fresh stories that break free from the same old development-room thinking. On top of that, the deal terms – covering credit, profit participation, and derivative revenue – give writers a pretty solid safety net, which should inspire them to pour their best work into the process.

But let’s be real – the challenges are just as big.

An open call means a tsunami of submissions. Sifting through that mountain to find stories with genuine screen potential is a massive, grueling task. It takes more than just good taste; it requires a deep read on the market, regulatory realities, and what audiences are actually feeling right now.

Even if the actress’s studio puts together a dedicated content evaluation team, it’s tough to build a project-assessment system as polished as what the top streaming platforms and production companies have spent years perfecting. We’ve seen plenty of actors try to put together their own projects only to watch them crash and burn. Just because the star is calling the shots doesn’t mean the hit rate automatically goes up.

And let’s not forget – a great script is just the starting line. Getting from page to screen means navigating a maze of adaptation, production, post-production, censorship, and scheduling. If an actor-led project hits a snag down the line – whether it’s resource allocation or assembling the right creative team – even the best idea can stall out before it ever sees the light of day.

An open script call might solve the “what do we even have to film?” problem, but it can’t replace the steady backbone of a fully industrialized system. Whether this self-packaged project actually lands as a hit? That’s a question only time – and the final product – can answer.
