LayarHijau – Chinese drama Road to Success, starring Esther Yu and Chen Jingke, has officially wrapped up its run. Although the soccer-themed series was consistently outperformed in the ratings by Love for You, starring Song Weilong and Zhang Jingyi, its finale unexpectedly won widespread praise from viewers. Instead of ending with the familiar proposal-and-wedding formula, the drama delivered a more meaningful conclusion centered on personal growth and chasing one’s dreams.

In the final episode, Lin Wanxing (Esther Yu) and coach Wang Fa (Chen Jingke) lead Hongjing No. 8 High School’s soccer team to a championship victory. After the celebration, the couple takes a walk along the beach, where Wang Fa picks up a bottle that has washed ashore. Lin Wanxing jokingly asks if it contains an engagement ring, assuming he’s about to propose. Instead, she finds an application for a doctoral program—her lifelong dream. The unexpected twist earned praise from viewers for breaking away from the predictable romance-drama ending.
One of the few Chinese idol dramas centered on soccer, Road to Success was originally expected to ride the wave of excitement surrounding the sport and boost its ratings. However, much of the story focuses on Lin Wanxing’s struggle to clear her name after being framed by her senior, Xiang Zi.
After his feelings for Lin Wanxing turned into resentment, Xiang Zi orchestrates a series of tragedies. He uses her identity to manipulate Jason, Wang Fa’s favorite student, into jumping from a building and is also responsible for the death of their mentor. Once a promising psychology master’s graduate, Lin Wanxing loses everything overnight because of the false accusations and eventually begins teaching at Hongjing No. 8 High School. By the end of the series, she finally gathers enough evidence to sue Xiang Zi, clearing her name and restoring her reputation.
While reclaiming her life, Lin Wanxing also finds happiness with Wang Fa. Together, they lead the school’s soccer team to a historic championship, marking a major turning point for both themselves and their students.
Rather than suggesting that winning the championship solved everything, the finale shows that the students still face uncertainty about college, friendships, and their futures. Many viewers praised the drama for portraying those challenges realistically instead of giving every character a flawless happily-ever-after.
The beach scene quickly became one of the finale’s most talked-about moments. Instead of presenting Lin Wanxing with an engagement ring, Wang Fa surprises her with the doctoral application. He explains that he believes pursuing a Ph.D. is the future she truly wants, even more than becoming his wife right away. His decision to support her dreams over a conventional romantic gesture leaves Lin Wanxing deeply moved and earns praise from viewers.
The story then jumps ahead by one year. After leaving Hongjing No. 8 High School, Lin Wanxing returns to the campus with Wang Fa and revisits the secret hideout they once shared with their students. There, several of the students surprise her with a birthday celebration they have secretly prepared.
Reflecting on everything that has changed over the past year, Lin Wanxing realizes she never imagined she would one day clear her name and start over. The final scene shows her walking across a university campus as a doctoral student, delivering an unconventional ending that replaces the usual wedding finale with a story about second chances, personal growth, and fulfilling one’s dreams—a conclusion that resonated strongly with many viewers.
