LayarHijau – Stephen Chow’s latest film, Kung Fu Soccer, continues its impressive run at the Chinese box office. According to Maoyan Professional Edition, the film’s cumulative box office, including advance ticket sales, surpassed 1 billion yuan (approximately US$139 million) as of July 17.
The milestone has also prompted a higher long-term forecast. Maoyan now projects Kung Fu Soccer to finish its theatrical run with more than 3 billion yuan (around US$417 million) in total box office revenue.

The film’s success will also push the combined mainland China box office of Stephen Chow’s directorial works beyond 6.7 billion yuan (approximately US$931 million). Including overseas markets, the worldwide box office for his films is expected to approach the 7 billion yuan mark (around US$972 million).
Despite its commercial success, audience reception has been mixed. Kung Fu Soccer currently holds a 6.5 rating on Douban.
According to Lighthouse Professional Edition, the film opened on July 11 with a massive 260 million yuan (about US$36 million) on its first day, setting the biggest opening-day record in China since this year’s Lunar New Year holiday season.
Kung Fu Soccer is Stephen Chow’s seventh feature film as a solo director and is widely regarded as a spiritual successor to Shaolin Soccer, released 25 years ago. The film stars Zhang Xiaofei, Dilraba Dilmurat, and Lay Zhang, alongside former Chinese women’s national football team players Zhao Lina and Li Jiayue.
Blending Chow’s signature slapstick comedy with martial arts and sports action, the film follows Team Emei, an underdog women’s football squad that defies the odds in its pursuit of a championship title.
Stephen Chow Confirms Kung Fu Soccer 2
During the film’s promotional tour, Stephen Chow surprised fans by revealing that Kung Fu Soccer 2 is officially in early development.
Responding to a young fan who asked what he planned to make next, Chow confirmed that the sequel has entered its initial planning stage and teased its central storyline.
“Team Emei’s goal is to defeat the whole world. So far, they’ve only conquered half of it. The other half is waiting for us in the future.”
The sequel is expected to expand the story onto the international stage while continuing the inspirational underdog journey that defined the first film.
The latest box office milestone has also reshuffled the rankings of Stephen Chow’s highest-grossing films in mainland China. The Mermaid remains his biggest hit with 3.392 billion yuan, followed by Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons with 1.247 billion yuan.
Meanwhile, Kung Fu Soccer has overtaken The New King of Comedy, which earned 628 million yuan during its theatrical run. In just about a week after its release, the new film has already become the third highest-grossing movie of Stephen Chow’s directing career in mainland China.
From Shaolin Soccer to Kung Fu Soccer, Stephen Chow’s football-inspired cinematic universe has continued to captivate audiences for a quarter of a century. With Kung Fu Soccer 2 now officially on the way, Team Emei’s journey is set to continue on an even bigger stage.
