LayarHijau – Stephen Chow’s Kung Fu Soccer (功夫女足) continues its impressive run at the Chinese box office. According to data from Maoyan Professional Edition, as of 3:00 p.m. on July 16, the film had grossed more than 900 million yuan (approximately US$125 million) after just six days in theaters.
Released in mainland China on July 11, 2026, Kung Fu Soccer is directed and written by Stephen Chow. The film stars Zhang Xiaofei, Dilraba Dilmurat, and Lay Zhang in the leading roles, with special appearances by Carina Lau and Takeru Satoh. The supporting cast includes Chen Min, Li Zhuomei, Qin Pengfei, and several other actors.

The film’s success has not only made it the first blockbuster of China’s 2026 summer movie season but has also helped breathe new life into the country’s theatrical market. According to Sohu Entertainment, the film has become the key driver behind the summer box office’s strong recovery after a sluggish start.
During its first five days in theaters, Kung Fu Soccer earned 856 million yuan (approximately US$119 million). Based on its current momentum, Lighthouse Professional Edition projects the film’s final box office to exceed 2.5 billion yuan (around US$348 million), while Maoyan Professional Edition estimates it could surpass 3 billion yuan (approximately US$418 million) if the strong performance continues.
Thanks largely to Kung Fu Soccer, China’s total box office revenue for July has reached 1.755 billion yuan (about US$245 million), marking a 23.5% increase compared with the same period last year. The gap has continued to widen as the film maintains its box office momentum.
The impact is also evident across the broader summer movie season. Total summer box office revenue in China has now exceeded 3.4 billion yuan (approximately US$474 million), overtaking 3.33 billion yuan (around US$464 million) recorded during the same period in 2025. The latest figures indicate that this year’s summer season has finally pulled ahead of last year’s performance.
Meanwhile, the animated feature The Eight Immortals! (八仙！) is also gaining momentum. Produced by Chengdu Huameng Chengzhen Film & Culture Media and Shanghai Huaren Pictures, the film has climbed to second place in the daily preview box office rankings, surpassing Minions and the Big Monster.
The animated film has received an enthusiastic response from audiences, earning preview scores of 9.7 on Maoyan and 9.6 on Taopiaopiao. Encouraged by the positive word of mouth, the distributor has moved up its official release date from July 24 to July 18, 2026.
If The Eight Immortals! exceeds box office expectations after its official release, industry observers believe China’s summer box office will continue its upward trajectory throughout the second half of July, building on the momentum sparked by the success of Kung Fu Soccer.
