Recently, Hou Minghao, Ai Mi, and the rest of the Key to the Phoenix Heart cast attended a promotional event. During a Q&A session, the drama’s director praised the chemistry between the two lead actors, saying it felt so natural that it barely looked like acting.
“Their performances feel incredibly real. The way they look at each other is so sincere—it doesn’t seem like they’re acting at all. Sometimes I even wonder if they’ve really fallen for each other,” the director joked, drawing laughter from both the audience and the cast.
The playful remark immediately caught Hou Minghao off guard. As soon as he heard it, he dramatically stretched his neck forward with a look of shock and panic, as if worried the joke might be taken seriously. Standing beside him, Ai Mi couldn’t stop laughing, especially after seeing her co-star’s priceless reaction.
A video of the moment quickly spread across Chinese social media, with many netizens praising Hou Minghao’s spontaneous and hilarious expression.
During the event, the two stars also recreated one of Key to the Phoenix Heart’s most memorable confession scenes. Facing each other on stage, Hou Minghao delivered the romantic line, “If I wanted to confess my feelings to you right now, would you think I was crazy? I like you.”
Ai Mi sweetly replied, “I like you too.”
As soon as the reenactment ended, however, both actors burst into laughter and struggled to stay in character. They kept smiling and making eye contact, prompting fans to once again praise their undeniable chemistry both on and off screen.
Hou Minghao’s panicked reaction also became a hot topic online. Some netizens joked that the actor was so flustered because Ai Mi is only 18 years old now. She was just 16 when filming for Key to the Phoenix Heart began and turned 17 before production wrapped.
Many online commenters humorously suggested that Hou Minghao simply didn’t want the director’s joke to be misunderstood by the public, considering Ai Mi was still a minor during most of the filming period. While the speculation was made in jest, the lighthearted exchange between the cast has become one of the most talked-about moments from the drama’s promotional tour.
