LayarHijau – Chinese xianxia comedy drama Pull Strings (《師兄太穩健》) quickly captured attention after premiering on August 19. Adapted from the popular novel My Senior Brother Is Too Steady (《我師兄實在太穩健了》), the series is directed by He Shupei and stars Ao Ruipeng, Sun Zhenni, and Ai Mi in the lead roles.
The drama had already generated buzz following the release of its trailer, thanks to its unconventional comedic style and witty dialogue that set it apart from typical xianxia series. One scene that particularly caught viewers’ attention features Li Changshou, played by Ao Ruipeng, interacting with his junior fellow disciple Lan Ling’e, played by Ai Mi.

In the scene, Li Changshou casually tells Lan Ling’e, “I’ll handle the trouble. You can deal with the consequences.” But after saying that, he immediately runs away. His behavior is the complete opposite of the idealized senior brother often seen in xianxia dramas, making the scene one of the show’s funniest moments.
An Unconventional Take on the Senior Brother Character
Xianxia dramas often portray senior male disciples as dependable figures who are always ready to protect their junior disciples. They are typically willing to take risks, face danger, and even put themselves in harm’s way to keep their junior sisters safe.
Pull Strings takes a different approach with Li Changshou. Ao Ruipeng’s character believes in keeping a low profile and prioritizing his own safety. Rather than looking for trouble, he carefully considers every possible outcome before taking action.
That philosophy becomes a source of comedy whenever Li Changshou interacts with Lan Ling’e. His willingness to get involved while finding a way to avoid dealing with the consequences gives their interactions a playful twist.
Instead of portraying Li Changshou as a flawless senior brother who always steps up as a hero, the series makes him cautious, calculating, and reluctant to take unnecessary risks. This unconventional characterization also gives his dynamic with Lan Ling’e a fresher and more entertaining feel.
Bringing Modern Humor Into a Xianxia World
Pull Strings also stands out for blending modern humor with its fantasy setting.
In the trailer, Li Changshou even gives one of his techniques a name inspired by a washing machine. In another scene, he casually refers to “computer special effects” when asked about something happening in the cultivation world, as though a supernatural event could simply be explained using modern technology.
This kind of absurd humor has become one of Pull Strings’ defining features. Rather than maintaining the serious tone often associated with xianxia dramas, the series embraces unexpected situations, contemporary references, and characters who deliberately break away from familiar genre conventions.
The approach has received positive reactions from viewers who appreciate the drama’s willingness to move away from familiar formulas. Much of the attention has centered on how Pull Strings handles the relationship between Li Changshou and Lan Ling’e without turning the senior brother into yet another overly heroic protector.
By combining cultivation fantasy, unconventional characters, witty dialogue, and modern humor, Pull Strings has quickly emerged as one of the xianxia comedies generating buzz since its August 19 premiere.
