The scandal first came to light when Japanese media outlet Shūkan Bunshun reported that Miyama and Maria Kano had allegedly met privately outside their professional commitments, including reportedly going to a hotel together.
The allegations drew widespread attention because both actors are married. Miyama is married to actress Shuri, while Maria Kano is also married. Their alleged relationship was therefore reported in Japan as an affair involving two married people.
The controversy was particularly sensitive because Miyama and Maria were co-stars in the same production and had to continue performing together while their private lives were under intense public scrutiny.
Miyama’s agency previously acknowledged that the actor had spent time alone with Maria. However, it did not publicly confirm that they were having an affair and said Miyama regretted his actions and the concern they had caused.
The controversy appeared to be winding down after the musical completed its run. However, a new report published on August 21 has brought fresh allegations to light.
Japanese media outlet FRIDAY quoted a source familiar with the production as saying that Miyama and Kano’s closeness began during rehearsals. Kano reportedly suggested having private rehearsals because she was concerned about Miyama’s acting performance.
According to the source, however, Miyama allegedly misread the situation and began asking her to meet him privately. She reportedly turned down some of his requests.
The source further claimed that Miyama reacted negatively when she refused, allegedly locking himself in a dressing room and even skipping rehearsals.
The alleged pressure reportedly intensified after the musical opened on July 12. Miyama was accused of threatening to withdraw from the production if she refused to meet him.
According to the FRIDAY report, Miyama allegedly warned that if he left the production, the show could not continue and she could potentially be held financially responsible for the resulting losses.
The report also claimed that her condition deteriorated amid the alleged pressure. She was reportedly diagnosed with adjustment disorder on July 20.
However, the allegations about Miyama’s conduct are based on the account of a source quoted by the media and have not been established as fact in court.
After their alleged relationship became public, Miyama was also reportedly unwilling to end things with her. According to FRIDAY, he allegedly said he would divorce his wife while questioning whether she intended to divorce her husband as well.
When asked about the reported remarks, she did not directly confirm or deny them. She said she could not comment because the matter also involved other people.
The latest allegations have therefore shifted the focus of the scandal. What initially emerged as an alleged affair between two married co-stars has now expanded into claims that Miyama pressured her to continue meeting him in secret.
The scandal has since attracted attention beyond Japan. Hong Kong media outlet HK On.cc also reported on the allegations, going further by describing claims that Miyama pressured her into secretly meeting him and having an intimate relationship.
There is an important distinction between the reports, however. The latest Japanese coverage specifically focuses on allegations that Miyama pressured her into private meetings, while the Hong Kong report framed the allegations more explicitly as claims that he pressured her into having an intimate relationship.
Kano’s side has also previously stated that some reports about her contained information that did not reflect the facts and indicated that legal action could be considered.
For now, the allegations surrounding the two actors remain unproven. The Japanese production of Crash Landing on You has already completed its run, but the controversy surrounding its two leads has continued to grow following the latest reports.
