Xiao Wuyi Fakes His Death in the Final Battle
In the final episodes, Xiao Wuyi (Hou Minghao), the commander of the Beifu Army, appears to die in a sea of flames during the Battle of Dingfengpo. However, his death was actually part of a carefully planned strategy with Li Mao (Wang Yilun).
The two secretly joined forces and staged a falling out to deceive their enemies. Xiao Wuyi pretended to defect to Beiqin and even wounded Li Mao in front of everyone, making their enemies believe that they had truly become rivals.
After escaping through a hidden passage beneath the Dingfengpo cliff, Xiao Wuyi survived the battle. However, his severe injuries caused him to lose his memory.
Xiao Wuyi Loses His Memory but Falls in Love with Xie Jiayu Again
After surviving the battle, Xiao Wuyi hid his identity behind a bronze mask and took on the name Wu Ming. Although he lost all his memories, his life was saved thanks to the rare medicine Xianren Jiang provided by Xie Jiayu (Ai Mi).
For the next three years, Xiao Wuyi lived in hiding while recovering from his injuries and helping carry out reforms within Beifu.
Three years later, Xiao Wuyi and Xie Jiayu unexpectedly crossed paths again. Even though he no longer remembered the woman in front of him, Xiao Wuyi still found himself falling in love with Xie Jiayu at first sight.
The Red Ribbon Brings Back Xiao Wuyi’s Memories
Xiao Wuyi’s memories finally returned after he saw the red ribbon that Xie Jiayu had tied to a tree as a symbol of their love.
After regaining his memories, Xiao Wuyi beat a drum in the middle of the street to search for Xie Jiayu.
The scene became a touching reflection of their past. When Xiao Wuyi lost his sight on the battlefield, Xie Jiayu once used the sound of drums to guide him back. This time, Xiao Wuyi used the same sound to call out to the woman he loved.
The two finally reunited at the Lantern Festival. They embraced each other in tears and made a promise to stay together through three lifetimes.
Xiao Wuyi Gives Up the Throne for a Peaceful Life
In the finale, Xiao Wuyi discovers that he is actually the long-lost Crown Prince Wenxi.
He also obtains all four Quegu Tokens, which contain the secret of a valuable mine and serve as a symbol of the right to claim the throne.
Although Xiao Wuyi has the chance to become emperor, he chooses to give up his royal position.
He splits the Quegu Token into two parts. One half is melted down into a hairpin for Xie Jiayu as a symbol of their love, while the other half is turned into a plow blade, representing his decision to abandon power and choose a simple life.
By making this choice, Xiao Wuyi leaves behind his identity as crown prince and chooses to live freely with Xie Jiayu in the mountains. His decision also fulfills Xie Jiayu’s wish for him to live a long and peaceful life.
Li Mao Becomes Emperor
Meanwhile, Li Mao eventually ascends the throne after it is revealed that he is the rightful heir to the royal family.
At the same time, Xie Taifu faces a painful truth. The grand plan he had spent years preparing ultimately falls apart after he learns that his biological son, whom he once tried to protect through a baby-switching scheme, had already died long ago.
As a result, Li Mao, whom he had raised for years, is not his biological son.
However, Li Mao is still a legitimate descendant of the royal family, making him the rightful person to become emperor. He also lets go of his feelings for Xie Jiayu and gives his blessing to Xiao Wuyi and Xie Jiayu’s relationship.
The Fate of the Supporting Characters
The supporting characters also receive their own conclusions in the finale.
Li Lejun (Ma Qiuyuan) chooses to take a slow-acting poison and sacrifices her life in front of both armies to clear the path for Li Mao’s rise to the throne.
Meanwhile, He Yuanji (Zheng Yawen) breaks free from her family’s control and enters the court after becoming the top scholar in the imperial examination.
On the other hand, Empress Dowager He passes away after the emperor’s death.
With the political conflicts resolved and each character’s fate receiving a clear conclusion, Key to the Phoenix Heart delivers a happy ending for Xiao Wuyi and Xie Jiayu. Xiao Wuyi chooses love and freedom over power, while Li Mao takes responsibility as emperor to lead the kingdom. The finale also wraps up the drama’s long-running mysteries and political schemes, leaving many viewers satisfied with the conclusion.
