LayarHijau – Stephen Chow has exited the cinema business in China, with the transaction valued at just around $0.13. Bigao Group (8220), where the Hong Kong film star is a major shareholder, recently announced the sale of its entire stake in Bigao Cinemas Investment Limited for HK$1, or approximately $0.13.
The HK$1 consideration represents the total transaction value for the entire ownership stake, not the price of an individual share. Once the deal is completed, Bigao Cinemas Investment Limited will no longer be a subsidiary of Bigao Group, and its financial results will no longer be consolidated into the group’s financial statements.

Bigao Cinemas Investment Limited has primarily operated cinemas in China. The disposal of the entire stake means Bigao Group will no longer have any cinema operations, ending Stephen Chow’s involvement in the Chinese cinema business through the group.
Cinema Company Reported a Loss
The decision to sell the company came amid its financial performance. In the previous fiscal year, Bigao Cinemas Investment Limited recorded revenue of approximately HK$2.25 million, or about $288,000.
However, the company also recorded an operating loss of approximately HK$1.2 million, equivalent to around $154,000.
Bigao Group said it decided to proceed with the disposal after considering the group’s financial performance and reviewing its business and operational conditions.
According to the group, the sale is expected to strengthen its cash flow and improve liquidity. By exiting the cinema business, Bigao Group can also reallocate its resources to other opportunities currently available to the group.
Bigao Group Is Not Simply Receiving $0.13
Although the stated transaction consideration is only HK$1, or around $0.13, this does not mean Bigao Group is simply receiving $0.13 from the disposal and walking away.
As of August 31, 2026, the group of companies being disposed of had net liabilities of approximately HK$8.6 million, or about $1.10 million. The transaction therefore involves the transfer of the business together with its financial position.
Bigao Group estimates that the disposal could generate a gain of approximately HK$5.4 million, or around $692,000, attributable to the owners of the company.
In other words, the HK$1, or approximately $0.13, is the agreed consideration for the transfer of the entire ownership stake. It does not represent the value of all the assets or the overall financial position of the cinema business being sold.
Stephen Chow Returns With a New Film
The disposal comes as Stephen Chow returns to the spotlight in the film industry. His latest movie, Kung Fu Soccer (功夫女足), was released this year following a lengthy gap since his previous feature film project.
The new movie marks Stephen Chow’s latest big-screen project after The New King of Comedy (新喜剧之王) in 2019, putting roughly seven years between the two films.
Before that, Stephen Chow was involved in several major movie projects released relatively close together, including Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons in 2013, The Mermaid in 2016, Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back in 2017, and The New King of Comedy in 2019.
With the disposal, Bigao Group has ended its involvement in the cinema business in China and plans to redirect its resources toward other opportunities. Stephen Chow, meanwhile, continues his activities in the entertainment industry through his film projects.
