LayarHijau – Youth romance drama Road to Success (灿如繁星), starring Esther Yu and Chen Jingke, is currently winning over viewers. In the series, Chen plays Wang Fa, a calm, dependable football coach whose mature and caring personality has further cemented his image as “husband material.”
Despite the growing popularity of that label, Chen admitted he has never really understood why so many people see him that way.

“Honestly, I don’t understand what the standard is. I don’t know where that impression comes from. Maybe it’s because in the drama I’m mentoring more than a dozen young players. Our relationship is like that of a father and his children,” Chen said in an interview with Sohu Entertainment.
He believes Wang Fa’s role as a mentor naturally gives off a mature, responsible, and dependable image, which may be why audiences associate him with the “husband material” label.
Beyond that image, Chen also admitted he has an old-school personality—a description that has come not only from fans but also from his co-stars.
His On My Way (致我那菜市场的白月光) co-star Zhang Jingyi once described him as someone with a very old-school personality. Rather than denying it, Chen happily embraced the label. He even joked that if he really was old-school, then Zhang Jingyi was still “an elementary school student” who needed guidance.
Esther Yu, his co-star in Road to Success, has also teased him by calling him “lao ganbu” (老干部), a Chinese slang term often used to describe young people who carry themselves with the maturity, discipline, and traditional mindset of someone much older.
“I don’t think that’s something I can change anymore,” Chen said with a laugh.
Although their personalities are quite different, Chen had nothing but praise for both actresses.
He described Esther Yu as someone who is highly focused on set and incredibly loyal to her friends. According to Chen, she often treats the cast and crew to drinks and is always coming up with creative ideas during promotional activities. He admitted he’s still learning from her because of her imaginative and unconventional way of thinking.
As for Zhang Jingyi, Chen said she approaches acting with emotion, while he tends to rely more on logic. He believes those contrasting personalities helped them complement each other throughout filming.
“She says I’m too rational, and I tell her she’s too emotional. Even our director often said we balanced each other out,” he recalled.
In addition to Road to Success, Chen has also wrapped filming for On My Way (致我那菜市场的白月光) with Zhang Jingyi and Today I Still Haven’t Become a Doll (今天也没变成玩偶呢) alongside Chen Duling. He said that working with actresses who each have distinct personalities has given him a fresh experience with every project.
For his own part, however, Chen has no plans to change who he is.
“I think men look best when they’re clean-cut, simple, and natural. When you’re paired with actresses who have different personalities, that creates a different kind of chemistry every time,” he said.
