The Story of Chen Yi and Miao Jing
The series follows the lives of Chen Yi (played by Song Weilong) and Miao Jing (played by Zhang Jingyi). After their parents remarry, the two become step-siblings and form a new family. Amidst the ups and downs of life, they protect each other and grow up together.
Viewers have been particularly drawn to the fateful reunion of the two leads and their childhood dynamic filled with playful bickering. Beyond the storyline, audiences have praised the steady pacing and the meticulous, era-specific street details that perfectly capture the immersive small-town atmosphere of “Tengcheng.”
Striking Visual Transformations
The actors’ visual transformations have also been a major talking point. Song Weilong steps out of his usual comfort zone, sporting a beard and a buzz cut to portray a rough, rebellious working-class youth with a surprisingly soft heart.
Meanwhile, Zhang Jingyi perfectly captures Miao Jing’s layered personality, portraying a character who appears cold on the outside but possesses a fiercely stubborn and determined core.
Behind the Scenes and Character Insights
During the “Back to Tengcheng” premiere event in Beijing, Song Weilong shared his thoughts on Chen Yi, describing him as a kind person who masks his vulnerability. It is only when Miao Jing sees through his facade that he finally lets his guard down.
Zhang Jingyi added that Miao Jing’s stubbornness is actually a reflection of her firmness in her choices. The two find solace in each other’s company while drifting through life, becoming each other’s ultimate support system. Their intense on-screen chemistry and expressive eye contact have even led netizens to dub them the “perfectly cast step-siblings.”
The production team highlighted that Chen Yi and Miao Jing’s bond is beautifully simple yet profound: just as a wild dog needs a bone to survive, the bone also needs the wild dog to protect it. Fans are certainly eager to see how their journey unfolds in the upcoming episodes.
