Romance and Costume Dramas Dominate
In terms of genre, urban romance and costume dramas were the most prominent categories in the Q3 ranking. The top two positions went to Love For You and Never-Ending Summer, both of which focus on emotional stories and relationships between the characters.
Love For You posted a 0.48 percent rating, making it the highest-rated drama on satellite television during the third quarter. Never-Ending Summer followed with 0.43 percent.
Meanwhile, Royal Betrothal ranked third with a 0.39 percent rating. The costume drama’s strong performance shows that stories set in historical periods continue to appeal to satellite television audiences.
The top 20 also featured a diverse range of genres. Beyond Wukong S1 incorporates elements of mythology, while Boyhood 2 is a youth drama set in a school environment.
Rebound Love and The Heir are dramas centered on everyday life. Unsolved Case is a crime investigation drama, while Nine Bullet Holes explores a military-themed story.
A Different Pattern from CCTV Ratings
The Q3 ratings pattern on China’s satellite television channels differed noticeably from the ranking of dramas that premiered on CCTV during the same period.
The dramas at the top of the CCTV ranking were more heavily concentrated in spy dramas, period stories, and narratives centered on family, the nation and national interests. Spy dramas occupied both the first and second positions on the CCTV ranking.
By contrast, evening audiences on satellite television showed a stronger preference for romance and costume stories. Heavier dramas centered on family, the nation and national interests had relatively weaker competitiveness on the satellite television circuit.
The difference essentially reflects the distinct audience profiles of the two types of television platforms. It also shows how drama creators are increasingly taking the viewing preferences of audiences on different platforms into account when developing the types of stories they offer.
