Synopsis of Road to Success: A Psychologist and a Soccer Coach
Adapted from the popular novel Narrow Road (狭路) by Chang Er from Jinjiang Literature City, Road to Success features a rather unique theme, blending youth, soccer competition, and psychological healing.
The story focuses on Lin Wanxing (played by Esther Yu), a Ph.D. in psychology who returns to her hometown to teach after experiencing major life changes. There, she unexpectedly crosses paths with Wang Fa (played by Chen Jingke), a dedicated soccer coach who recently returned from abroad.
The two are suddenly tasked with rebuilding a soccer team consisting of troubled teenagers who are often considered a “losing team.” Through Lin Wanxing’s gentle psychological counseling and Wang Fa’s systematic, hardcore training methods, they strive to lead these youths out of their slump and help them achieve personal growth.
A Stellar Cast
Aside from the chemistry between Esther Yu and Chen Jingke, the drama is also supported by an equally exciting cast. It features Victor Ma, Xie Keyin, as well as veteran actors like Feng Lei, Li Lichun, and Gong Beibi, who will all enliven the storyline.
Esther Yu’s appearance in this drama has also drawn sharp attention. Unlike the sweet characters she often plays, she sports a sleek, long straight black hair look that gives off an elegant and cool vibe. Her look has even managed to gain significant attention and rank on popular female character charts in June.
Overwhelming Fan Anticipation
Since the premiere date was announced, Road to Success has immediately sparked warm discussions on social media. According to released data, the drama topped the most anticipated drama chart on Weibo on the day of the announcement, with a hype value reaching 75.82 million. The number of pre-orders across various platforms has also surpassed 710,000.
The drama’s promotion has also been unique and interactive. Esther Yu not only did the voice-over for her own character but was also frequently seen holding a premiere date sign during her filming breaks. This action was immediately met with a cute response from fans who replied by bringing Lin Wanxing character standees, creating an adorable interaction between the star and her fans.
Esther Yu’s Transformation and Smart Strategy Amidst the World Cup
As one of the leading representatives of the post-95s generation of actresses, Esther Yu is indeed better known for her historical and fantasy dramas such as Love Between Fairy and Devil, My Journey to You, and Love Game in Eastern Fantasy. The presence of Road to Success becomes a crucial step for her to prove her acting in modern dramas and break the “sweet” image attached to her.
Equally interesting is the drama’s highly strategic release schedule. Road to Success will start airing right when the World Cup enters the knockout stage. The production team deliberately capitalized on the hot momentum of the world’s biggest sporting event to tie the drama’s topics with the World Cup euphoria. This marketing strategy is expected to attract attention not only from teen drama fans but also from sports enthusiasts in general.
Are you already impatient to watch Lin Wanxing and Wang Fa lead their soccer team? Make sure Road to Success is on your watchlist!
