The Realism Trend and the Power of Veteran Actors
Reviewing the CCTV ratings list, it is clear that realism has become the absolute mainstream trend in the first half of 2026. The dramas on the list focus on urban life, family dynamics, and the struggles of ordinary people.
The drama industry appears to be moving away from the trend of high-fantasy (xianxia) or overly detached palace romance stories. Instead, creators are choosing to root their work in local realistic narratives that accurately reflect the preferences of the general public.
Beyond relatable, everyday storytelling, casting choices have also been key to success. Producers are prioritizing actors with solid, nationally recognized acting skills. The presence of top-tier veteran actors like Zhang Jiayi, Mei Ting, and Tian Yu, combined with mid-career actresses who possess broad appeal and strong public favor like Tan Songyun, has proven capable of solidifying the viewer base and ensuring stable ratings.
