LayarHijau – Mortal Kombat 2 has officially arrived in theaters, bringing more iconic fighters from the legendary video game franchise onto the big screen. However, one character nearly joined the sequel before ultimately being left out of the movie.
The film serves as a follow-up to Mortal Kombat, which was based on the famous game series created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. Directed by Simon McQuoid, the sequel follows Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban, as he joins Earthrealm’s battle against Outworld and its ruler Shao Kahn, portrayed by Martyn Ford.

Speaking to GamesRadar+, screenwriter Jeremy Slater admitted that deciding which fighters would appear in the movie was one of the toughest parts of development because the Mortal Kombat universe features such a huge roster of characters.
He revealed that Tremor almost made it into the sequel. During early development, the lava- and metal-controlling ninja was planned to appear in a fight scene against Sonya Blade, played by Jessica McNamee. Slater believed Tremor’s abilities could have created visually exciting action sequences for the film.
The writer also noted that Tremor has a loyal fanbase among longtime Mortal Kombat players. In the original draft, the character was even supposed to die during the battle scene.
As work on the script continued, however, the creative team decided the character did not blend naturally into the story. Slater eventually replaced Tremor with Sindel, portrayed by Ana Thu Nguyen. The character is known as the mother of Kitana, who is played by Adeline Rudolph in the movie.
According to Slater, the team felt Sindel had a stronger connection to the sequel’s emotional storyline and deserved a bigger role than she originally had in the script. Expanding her presence also gave the filmmakers a chance to fully showcase her supernatural powers throughout the movie’s large-scale fight scenes.
Slater explained that Tremor’s role was ultimately too limited to properly develop the character in a meaningful way. Because of that, the audience likely would not have formed much emotional attachment to him. Using Sindel instead allowed the film to raise the emotional stakes while still delivering the intense action sequences fans expect from Mortal Kombat.
Although Tremor remains popular within parts of the gaming community, he is still considered a relatively lesser-known fighter in the franchise overall. The character first appeared in the 2000 game Mortal Kombat: Special Forces and has mainly appeared as downloadable content in later titles.
Mortal Kombat 2 is currently playing in theaters now.
