According to Taiwanese media reports, A Splendid Match has continued climbing in popularity and has surpassed several dramas airing in the same time slot. The drama was reportedly able to outperform Fate Chooses You (佳偶天成), starring Allen Ren and Wang Herun, during its premiere period, as well as Light to the Night (黑夜告白) starring Dylan Wang and Born with Luck (低智商犯罪) led by Tian Xiwei. The drama is currently said to rank second in popularity, trailing only behind Lady Liberty (愛情沒有神話), starring Mark Chao and Tang Yan.
One of the drama’s biggest attractions is its “one woman, four men” romance storyline. Ren Min plays Gu Jinchao, the daughter of the Gu family who was believed from birth to bring misfortune to her father Gu Dezhao’s political career. Because of that prophecy, she was sent away and raised by her wealthy merchant grandmother.
As she comes of age, Gu Jinchao becomes entangled in a major political conflict surrounding the “New Tax Policy,” a reform that sparks fierce clashes within the imperial court and among aristocratic families. The reform is spearheaded by Chen Jingxing, played by Ci Sha, an ambitious official willing to do whatever it takes to push the policy forward.
Their relationship becomes increasingly complicated after Gu Jinchao accidentally witnesses Chen Jingxing killing someone for the sake of the reform. Shocked by the incident, she falls into the water and nearly drowns before being rescued.
However, the man who claims credit for saving her is actually Chen Xuanqing, played by Zuo Ye. Although Gu Jinchao suspects that something is being hidden from her, she gradually develops feelings for him. At the same time, her cousin Ji Yao, played by Zhang Yao, also harbors feelings for her, while the domineering noble heir Ye Xian, played by Winwin, suddenly enters the picture and further complicates the relationships.
The emotional tension among the five characters has become one of the main reasons the drama is attracting attention online. Many viewers have praised the cast’s chemistry and the engaging emotional dynamics between the characters.
Beyond the romance, the series has also been praised for delivering unusually intense political intrigue for a costume romance drama. A Splendid Match avoids the typical innocent-female-lead formula often seen in similar dramas. Instead, it presents a darker and more complex story centered on political reform and power struggles.
The drama depicts powerful aristocratic families hiring assassins to protect their land and wealth, while Chen Jingxing’s faction gradually becomes increasingly ruthless in order to ensure the reform succeeds. Meanwhile, the incompetent and short-tempered emperor only adds more chaos to the political situation.
Because of its layered political storytelling, some viewers have even described the drama as “the costume romance version of Joy of Life (庆余年).”
The series is also supported by a strong veteran cast. Besides Ren Min, Ci Sha, Winwin, Zuo Ye, and Zhang Yao, the drama also features Wu Gang, Yang Tongshu, Yang Qing, Yang Kun, and Li Yuan. Their performances are considered one of the reasons the political conflict and court intrigue feel more convincing and compelling.
