The finale featured a grand yet heart-wrenching wedding scene for He Simu, played by Dilraba Dilmurat, and Duan Xu, played by Chen Feiyu. During their nuptials, Duan Xu, who had been dying from chronic poisoning and severe battle wounds, chose to transfer his life energy and five senses to He Simu. This sacrifice allowed the spirit leader to truly experience the human world for the first time. However, this act of love led to Duan Xu passing away in He Simu’s arms, leaving her to experience her first real taste of tears and mortal sorrow.

Tensions reached a boiling point in the final episodes of Love Beyond the Grave when the antagonist Lu Da, played by Gu Zi Cheng, used Duan Xu’s life to blackmail He Simu into surrendering the sacred Wanling Lantern. The battle revealed that He Simu’s essence was tied to the lantern, leaving her vulnerable and mortally wounded. In a display of ultimate loyalty, Yan Ke, portrayed by Wei Zhe Ming, sacrificed his own life and dissolved into ashes to shield He Simu from a fatal blow, ensuring her survival at the cost of his existence.

Following Duan Xu’s physical death, his spirit remained as a wandering soul, silently accompanying He Simu as she traveled through the mortal lands. Overcome by the bittersweet nature of their bond, He Simu eventually decided to step down from her position as the spirit lord, passing the mantle of leadership to Xue Chenying, played by Xu Weilo. While this spiritual companionship provided some comfort, many fans felt the primary ending was too tragic for a couple that had endured so much hardship.

To satisfy the audience’s desire for a happier conclusion, Love Beyond the Grave released a special side story featuring an alternate ending. In this version, the character Zi Ji, played by Hu Yi Yao, is revealed to be the Si Ming God who governs the threads of fate. Moved by He Simu and Duan Xu’s selfless devotion to humanity, Zi Ji offered a divine intervention to resurrect Duan Xu. The condition required He Simu to relinquish all her spiritual powers and godhood to live out her days as a mortal woman.

He Simu accepted the offer without a second thought, viewing mortality as her ultimate dream rather than a loss. She poignantly stated, “Becoming a mortal has always been my greatest wish, so how can this be considered a price?” The special episode concluded with He Simu, now a commoner, reuniting with the resurrected Duan Xu at a modest cottage. This ending received widespread praise for staying true to the emotional core of the story while providing the happy ending that fans had long hoped for.
