LayarHijau— The fantasy drama Love Beyond the Grave concludes its run with an emotionally charged finale centered on deep sacrifice and love. The series follows He Simu, a cold but humanity-seeking spirit leader whose fate becomes intertwined with Duan Xu, a mysterious human general. Their relationship serves as the core of a story about sacrifice and the search for meaning in a world divided between humans and spirits.
Spoiler warning: This article contains details from the final episode.
The final arc of Love Beyond the Grave begins with a major conflict involving He Simu and the antagonist Lu Da, played by Gu Zi Cheng. Lu Da threatens Duan Xu’s life in order to obtain the Wanling Lantern. He is acting under Yan Ke’s orders. After obtaining the Wanling Lantern, Yan Ke discovers that he is unable to use it as a weapon.
Yan Ke then proceeds to kidnap Duan Xu in an attempt to force He Simu to abdicate her throne in exchange for her lover’s life. However, this plan also fails. In a subsequent move, Yan Ke forces Duan Xu to help him by casting a sensory-exchange spell when He Simu arrives to confront him. Duan Xu takes the opportunity to try to seize the Wanling Lantern from Yan Ke. Unbeknownst to both of them, Lu Da appears and swallows the lantern.
On the other side, the conflict escalates into a final battle between Yan Ke and He Simu. During this confrontation, Lu Da—aware that He Simu’s life is bound to the Wanling Lantern—decides to destroy it. This action causes He Simu to suffer severe injuries as the truth behind her life force is exposed.
Yan Ke, played by Wei Zhe Ming, then appears as a savior in the midst of chaos. He sacrifices himself and turns into ashes in order to save He Simu from Lu Da’s uncontrollable final attack.
After the conflict subsides, the story shifts to He Simu’s wedding with Duan Xu, played by Dilraba Dilmurat and Chen Feiyu. During the ceremonial moment, Duan Xu, who has long been weakened by poison and battle injuries, makes a decisive choice. He gives up his five senses to He Simu so she can experience the human world fully for the first time. This sacrifice ultimately leads to his death, as he dies in He Simu’s arms just as she begins to feel real emotional pain.
After Duan Xu’s passing, he does not truly leave He Simu. Instead, he remains as an invisible wandering spirit who continues to accompany her through the world. Grieving her loss, He Simu later decides to step down from her position as the spirit ruler and passes leadership to Xue Chenying, played by Xu Weilo.
Although they remain together in different realms, the main ending left many fans disappointed, as it was considered too tragic for a couple who had fought so hard for each other.
Responding to audience interest, the production team of Love Beyond the Grave released an alternate ending in a special additional episode that offers a more hopeful resolution. In this version, Zi Ji, played by Hu Yi Yao, is revealed to be the God of Fate who controls the destinies of both humans and spirits. Moved by the sacrifices made by He Simu and Duan Xu for the sake of the world, Zi Ji offers a chance to bring Duan Xu back to life as an ordinary human, on the condition that He Simu gives up all her spiritual powers and divine status.
He Simu accepts the condition without hesitation. For her, living a mortal life with Duan Xu is a far greater gift than any power she once held. She firmly states, “Becoming human is my greatest wish, so how could this be considered a price to pay?”
In the final moments of this alternate ending, He Simu—now an ordinary human—reunites with Duan Xu, who has returned to life, in a modest home. This marks a bittersweet yet hopeful conclusion for the two protagonists.
