LayarHijau— The production of the grand historical drama Northern Wei Dynasty (江山大同) has become the center of intense public scrutiny since it officially commenced filming in late March. This ambitious project carries a massive weight of expectation, backed by a staggering investment of 300 million Yuan. Positioned as the first historical drama to highlight the perspective of a Great Empress Dowager, it features top actress Yang Mi in a challenging dual role as Feng Sui and her niece, Feng Yan’er. She is paired with actor Liu Xueyi, who portrays the character Tuoba Jun, the imperial grandson. However, the production has been marred by controversies ranging from the removal of fan support attributes to heated debates over the script’s narrative integrity.
Northern Wei Dynasty (江山大同) tells an epic story set during the Northern Wei period, a time of significant political upheaval. The plot begins with the noble sacrifice of Princess Feng Sui for the sake of regional peace, an act that sets the foundation for the nation’s stability. The focus then shifts to the arduous struggle of Feng Yan’er as she navigates the treacherous political intrigues of the imperial palace. Yang Mi’s portrayal is expected to showcase a profound character transformation, spanning four decades from her youth to her reign as a formidable ruler. Meanwhile, Liu Xueyi’s Tuoba Jun serves as a pivotal figure alongside Feng Yan’er, together illustrating the complex power dynamics and the balance between personal affection and imperial duty.
Despite the grand scale of the production, which has garnered significant attention from CCTV, the drama has faced a storm of controversy regarding production management. The first issue arose when production staff secretly removed thousands of support flags set up by Yang Mi’s fans at the filming location. The production team claimed this was done to maintain “emotional balance” among the cast, but fans viewed the action as discrimination against Yang Mi’s star status. This incident is particularly sensitive as Yang Mi is currently in a transformative phase of her career after leaving Jay Walk Studio, having recently regained critical acclaim through the drama This Thriving Land (生万物).
Furthermore, a more substantial conflict has emerged regarding the integrity of the script, which screenwriter Jin Haishu reportedly prepared over ten years ago. Although marketed as a “female-centric” drama, recent script leaks suggest a significant shift in focus that allegedly marginalizes the female lead’s political agency. Crucial moments showcasing Feng Yan’er’s independent political intelligence are reportedly being cut or rewritten as joint achievements with Tuoba Jun. This has led to accusations of a “yin-yang” script, where the public synopsis differs from the actual filming script. As production continues, Northern Wei Dynasty (江山大同) stands at a crossroads, with its success depending on whether it can remain a monument to female power in history or succumb to pressures that dilute its narrative into a standard historical romance.
