LayarHijau — The competition among Chinese dramas or C-Dramas (a popular term for dramas from mainland China) in early April 2026 has shown highly competitive numbers. The latest production from Youku, Veil of Shadows (月鱗綺紀), officially premiered with significant rating performance, competing head-to-head with other major titles on streaming platforms.
According to data from Yunhe, Veil of Shadows (月鱗綺紀) recorded a market share of 9.7% on its first day. This achievement placed the drama in the third position among the most popular dramas currently airing. The second position is held by the drama Love Beyond the Grave (白日提燈), starring Dilraba Dilmurat and Arthur Chen, with a figure of 10.1%, or a narrow margin of only 0.4%. Meanwhile, the drama Pursuit of Jade (逐玉) starring Zhang Linghe and Tian Xiwei also continues to record a positive trend during the same period.

Veil of Shadows (月鱗綺紀) is an adaptation of the classic Painted Skin (畫皮) IP, focusing on a nine-tailed fox named Lu Wuyi (露芜衣) (played by Ju Jingyi) from a mysterious organization. She becomes involved in the search for the Dragon God power and must cooperate with Wu Shiguang (Joseph Zeng), Wu Wangyan (Chen Duling), and Ji Ling (Tian Jiarui) to investigate cases in Luo’an City. The plot utilizes a case-by-case unit format intertwined with the main plot regarding the resurrection of the figure Jiu Ying.
Despite a good start in terms of numbers, viewers in China provided several notes on the technical side and execution of this drama. Regarding the narrative, the reduction of the episode count from the original plan of 40 to 29 episodes was considered to have impacted the story transitions, which felt “jumpy.” Viewers on Chinese social media also highlighted the visual aesthetics, particularly the use of facial Filters which were considered too smooth, affecting the natural textures of the actors.
Filter (or smoothing) refers to the post-production digital process used to blur skin textures for a flawless look. This was particularly noted in the appearance of supporting actor Chang Huasen, who was previously known for his work in the dramas Tales of Dark River (暗河傳) and Whispers of Fate (水龍吟) on Youku, as well as A Journey to Love (一念關山) on iQIYI. Furthermore, the acting performances and the use of Original Voices (the actors’ actual voices) by several lead cast members have also become a point of much discussion among domestic audiences there.
Overall, Veil of Shadows (月鱗綺紀) has successfully captured significant attention in both international and domestic markets through solid rating performance. With fierce competition among April’s flagship dramas, the consistency of the plot in upcoming episodes will be the determining factor for this drama’s position in the popularity rankings moving forward.
