LayarHijau – Zhao Qing and Zheng Yecheng have drawn strong attention with their new short drama Seeds of Scarlet Longing (在你眉梢种红豆), which premiered on February 26. On its first day of release, the drama climbed to the No.1 spot on Maoyan’s popularity chart for short dramas. It is worth noting that Maoyan separates rankings for long-form dramas and short-form dramas, meaning the series topped the chart among other short dramas airing in the same period. Meanwhile, according to Yunhe data, the drama recorded a 10.1 percent effective market share on its premiere day, ranking third among short dramas broadcast simultaneously.
Seeds of Scarlet Longing presents a fresh fantasy romance premise. Shen Miu (Zheng Yecheng) is portrayed as a cold and powerful official who has only been able to see the world in black and white since childhood. His life changes when Liang Jiangzhu (Zhao Qing), a descendant of a mysterious clan, plants a “love gu” in him in order to save her own life. In this context, gu refers to a form of ancient poison or mystical curse rooted in Chinese folklore, often depicted as a spell-like force that binds two individuals together, influencing both their physical state and emotions.
Liang Jiangzhu suffers from a rare condition that threatens her life and must find a partner before turning 18 in order to survive. In a desperate moment, she ends up planting the gu in Shen Miu—the very man pursuing her. From that point on, Liang Jiangzhu becomes the only color in Shen Miu’s monochrome world. The concept that the male lead can only perceive color through the woman bound to him gives their relationship a sense of destiny while adding a deeply romantic layer to the story.
Their dynamic evolves from hostility and suspicion to mutual understanding. When planting the gu, Liang Jiangzhu commands Shen Miu not to harm her, including not harming himself. As a result, whenever Shen Miu attempts to attack or injure Liang Jiangzhu, the force backfires and injures him instead. His body instinctively protects her, creating dramatic tension that differs from the usual prolonged misunderstandings commonly seen in romance dramas.
As a short drama consisting of 24 episodes at around 20 minutes each, the pacing is tight and fast-moving, with little filler. One scene that sparked considerable discussion is the moment Liang Jiangzhu kisses Shen Miu on the neck as part of the gu ritual. Although the couple has not yet fully consummated their relationship, the palpable romantic tension between them has become a major talking point among viewers.
The production’s visual styling has also received praise. Zhao Qing stands out, particularly in her striking red costume that enhances her ethereal and mysterious aura. Zheng Yecheng’s high ponytail and short bangs give him a sharp yet elegant look, reinforcing his character’s commanding presence.
Zhao Qing previously gained widespread recognition for her roles in The Immortal Ascension and Unveil: Jadewind. With Seeds of Scarlet Longing, she once again demonstrates her potential as a leading actress capable of elevating a project’s popularity, while her first collaboration with Zheng Yecheng is already being viewed as one of the most promising on-screen pairings in the short drama landscape this year.
