LayarHijau – Costume drama Love and Crown, starring Ren Jialun and Peng Xiaoran, is facing public scrutiny amid rumors of chaotic script production. After his previous hit in The Demon Hunter’s Romance, Ren Jialun is encountering a very different experience this time, with the drama attracting criticism ahead of its final episodes.
Netizens have shared surprising details about the production. On the very first day of filming, Ren Jialun reportedly had only three pages of script for his scenes.

Peng Xiaoran also spoke out about her experience. She initially received the first 10 episodes, but most of them were later scrapped and rewritten. Subsequent scripts were delivered gradually as filming progressed. She explained that this made it extremely difficult to maintain character consistency, leaving actors to focus on individual scenes rather than the overall story. Peng Xiaoran emphasized that all major creative decisions—including changes to characters and plot—were made by the production team, not the actors.
Behind-the-scenes photos reportedly show a printer in Ren Jialun’s bodyguard’s car, leading to speculation that scripts were being printed on set as they were written. Many viewers found this shocking, considering it an unusual production practice and one that may explain the drama’s sometimes illogical plot.
Love and Crown also reportedly skipped promotional events with Ren Jialun or Peng Xiaoran. Rumors suggest that the drama’s broadcasting rights were purchased by Ren Jialun’s former company, Huanrui Century, which may have rushed production before the rights expired. After the drama was sold to Youku, production costs were said to be recovered, while the actors’ contracts had already ended. Some observers also claim that little to no promotional budget was prepared, leaving the drama to “stand on its own” and ultimately earning a low 4.8 rating on Douban, making it one of the year’s worst-rated costume dramas.
Within the story, Ren Jialun’s character faces immense pressure. His younger sibling dies due to the intrigue of the Empress and Royal Advisor, while his younger brother mistakenly blames him. To protect himself, Ren Jialun pretends to be dead, hands the imperial symbol to the Empress played by Peng Xiaoran, and leaps from the palace stage. The scene drew attention for its dramatic and emotional impact.
While Ren Jialun’s performance has been praised, many viewers criticized the plot for being full of misunderstandings and feeling outdated. Peng Xiaoran’s character underwent drastic changes from the novel, transforming from a brave woman into an empress overly focused on romance. She admitted she often received only one episode of the script per day, in line with reports that much of the story was written during filming. Many criticized Huanrui Century for alleged lack of professionalism, while Ren Jialun continued filming to fulfill his contract with the company.
