In an exclusive interview with Huanwang Big Data, producer Quan Xianglan shared her views on the criticisms and suggestions surrounding the adaptation of this beloved novel.
Quan began her explanation by emphasizing the importance of audience feedback. She stated, “I am very pleased and grateful for the feedback provided by the audience. Their criticisms and suggestions are a driving force for us.”
This highlights her commitment to listening to and responding to audience expectations, acknowledging that every piece of art will inevitably face debate and varied interpretations.
In addressing criticisms related to character and plot handling, Quan explained that the production team strives to remain faithful to the essence of the original story. Some of the controversies that arose involve the adaptation of the novel, where many fans feel anxious about how the characters and plot would be handled.
Some novel fans feel that the essence of the relationship between the main characters, Sang Yan and Wen Yifan, is not fully preserved. Additionally, there are criticisms regarding the handling of sensitive themes, such as emotional trauma and gender discrimination.
Some viewers believe that the portrayal of these issues could be too dramatic or unrealistic, potentially triggering strong emotional reactions. This is evident from protests by viewers and novel fans regarding the addition of harassment scenes at the beginning of the drama that were not present in the novel.
There is also debate about character portrayal, where some viewers feel that the main characters are not depicted with sufficient depth, thereby reducing the appeal of the story.
Quan added that although there were changes, they were all made with the aim of providing a deeper experience for new viewers without losing the charm that made the novel beloved. She also acknowledged that existing controversies can actually create space for broader discussions. “We hope to share our creative ideas through open communication, and we want the audience to find their emotional resonance in this drama,” she said. She sees criticism as an opportunity to improve and explore deeper themes, which are a primary focus in “The First Frost.”
Through her response, Quan Xianglan demonstrates that even though “The First Frost” faces criticism, the production team remains committed to listening to and learning from the audience. By maintaining the essence of the story while adapting it for new platforms, they hope to create a work that is not only entertaining but also encourages discussion about relevant issues. As Quan stated, “We will continue to strive to improve the quality of our works and create more high-quality dramas for everyone.”
