The mood at the dinner turns tense when Fu Shize’s mother asks when Fu Shize will finish his graduate studies and brings up the matter of Jiang Yuan again. Yun Li, who is discussing the dinner with her best friend, is startled to receive a video call from Fu Shize. When she answers, it turns out that the person calling is actually Fu Zhengchu. Fu Shize then takes his phone back and chats with Yun Li. At that moment, Xu Qingsong says he wants to take his relatives to the bar Overtime. “Sang Yan opened a bar called Overtime. Do you want to try it?” says the owner of EAW.
When Yun Li hears this, she quickly says that she and Tang Lin had also planned to visit the bar. In the end, they all meet there. For those who haven’t watched The First Frost, Overtime is a bar that Sang Yan and his college friends opened and run together.
Overtime also holds special meaning for fans of the The First Frost novel and drama. It is where Sang Yan (played by Bai Jingting) and Wen Yifan (played by Zhang Ruonan) meet again after parting when they graduated from high school. It is also the setting of an iconic scene that made novel readers laugh because of a mistake Wen Yifan makes.
In this Nanwu trilogy of novels, Fu Shize and Xu Qingsong do know Sang Yan. Fu Shize was a year below Sang Yan and Wen Yifan in high school, while Xu Qingsong and Fu Shize often hang out at Overtime.
As LayarHijau has previously reported, in an extra chapter of the novel Hard to Coax (the source novel of The First Frost), Sang Yan and Fu Shize meet again. At the time, Sang Yan and his group were shopping at the same place as Fu Shize. However, this scene was cut from both the drama The First Frost and When I Meet the Moon.
In a previous article, we noted that Fu Zhengchu and Xia Congsheng had discussed their experience of meeting Sang Zhi and Duan Jiaxu. However, the scene at Overtime raises questions about the story’s consistency. In the early episodes, the two siblings still believed that Duan Jiaxu was Sang Zhi’s older brother. Yet in the latest episode, Xia Congsheng says that his younger sibling once chased after the younger sister of the bar’s owner (Sang Yan). Xu Qingsong also says that he and Xia Congsheng need to meet Sang Yan, then asks Fu Zhengchu to take the drunk Tang Lin home.
Yun Li is drunk as well, and Fu Shize takes her home. This leads to an accidental kiss, an iconic moment that Lin Yi and Lu Yuxiao once reenacted at a promotional event for the drama.
Unfortunately, through episode 7, the three iconic characters from the novel Hidden Love (偷偷藏不住) are only mentioned by name and never appear on screen. This is hardly surprising, considering that Hidden Love and The First Frost air on Youku, while When I Meet the Moon airs on iQIYI. The chances of Sang Yan, Sang Zhi, Duan Jiaxu, and Wen Yifan appearing in this drama are slim, because crossovers between two different dramas airing on two different platforms are rare.
