LayarHijau – Nana has addressed criticism of her appearance following the release of Netflix’s The Scandal on September 18. Much of the discussion has focused on Nana’s lips, with some viewers saying they felt her appearance did not fit the character she portrays in the Joseon-era series.
On a fan communication platform on September 22, Nana directly responded to the reactions surrounding her appearance. “If my lips made people who saw them feel uncomfortable, then that was my fault,” Nana said.

She went on to acknowledge that her personal choice regarding her appearance may have been inappropriate from the perspective of her work as an actress. “I think my personal choice was not the right choice as an actress,” she said.
Nana’s remarks suggest that she sees her personal choices differently when considered in the context of her role as an actress, particularly when her appearance is part of portraying a character in a production.
Nana also apologized to her fans for having to see the negative comments directed at her. “I think the fans who love me must be hurt when they see the harsh criticism about me. That makes me even more sorry,” she said.
She then promised to work toward giving herself and her fans more positive things to hear. “From now on, I’ll work hard so that we can hear more good things together,” Nana said.
The criticism emerged after The Scandal premiered on Netflix. In the series, Nana plays Hee-yeon, a widow who has spent many years living a life of chastity and restraint.
The Scandal also marks Nana’s first historical drama since her debut. For the role of Hee-yeon, she moved away from the modern and glamorous image that has often been associated with her. The transformation can be seen in her hanbok costumes, speech, and overall portrayal of the character.
After the series was released, however, some viewers focused on Nana’s lips. Some said her fuller lips felt out of place in a story set during the Joseon era.
Other viewers said they found themselves repeatedly drawn to Nana’s lips, making it harder for them to focus on the character and story. The criticism subsequently sparked a broader debate over whether an actress’s physical appearance can affect how audiences perceive the character she portrays.
Others, meanwhile, felt that the criticism had gone too far by turning a specific part of an actress’s body into a subject of scrutiny. From this perspective, evaluating an actress’s appearance should not become excessive commentary about individual body features.

Regardless of the discussion surrounding Nana’s appearance, The Scandal has made a strong early showing on Netflix. Following its September 18 release, the series recorded 1.9 million views and 14.5 million hours watched in its first week, placing seventh on Netflix’s Global Top 10 for non-English TV shows.
The series also entered the Top 10 in 10 countries and regions, including South Korea, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Qatar, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. The achievement came just three days after its release.
The Scandal is adapted from the French novel Dangerous Liaisons and relocates the story to the Joseon era. The series centers on a dangerous love wager involving Lady Cho (Son Ye-jin) and Cho Won (Ji Chang-wook), with Hee-yeon becoming entangled in their complicated relationship.
Netflix has also recently released previously unseen stills showing developments in the relationship between the three characters. The new images are part of the ongoing promotion for The Scandal as the series continues its run.
