LayarHijau – A male fan in Japan has sparked a heated online discussion after sharing a video from a fan meet-and-greet featuring underground idol group Hallelujah Next in Hitachi, Ibaraki Prefecture.
The fan had attended the event excited to finally meet an idol he admired in person. However, after seeing the members face-to-face, he reportedly came away with mixed feelings, believing their appearance looked significantly different from the heavily edited photos he had previously seen on social media.

He filmed his interaction with the members and posted the footage on X. The video quickly went viral, surpassing 5 million views and triggering a debate over the gap between how idols appear in edited social media photos and how they look in person.
Social Media Photos vs. In-Person Appearance
Hallelujah Next is a sister group of local idol unit Team Hallelujah. The group operates as an underground idol act in the Hitachi area and frequently holds activities at local shopping malls.
Much of the discussion surrounding the viral video has focused on the apparent difference between the members’ social media photos and the footage from their face-to-face interaction with fans.

Some users said they were surprised by the contrast, with several commenting that the members looked noticeably different from the images they had seen online.
Others, however, came to the group’s defense. Some argued that the members were still attractive in their own way and that the perceived difference could be attributed to a combination of makeup, lighting, camera angles, posing and photo editing.

The controversy has also brought renewed attention to the phenomenon sometimes referred to in Japan as shashin-sagi, or “photo deception,” an informal term for situations in which someone’s appearance in photographs differs considerably from how they look in person.
More Than Just Looks
Some online comments specifically focused on the dental appearance of several members. Some users argued that the members were not unattractive, but that less-aligned teeth made their appearance stand out from the polished beauty standards commonly associated with idol photos.
The incident also highlights how social media images can shape expectations before fans meet performers in person.
Underground idols generally operate on a smaller scale than mainstream idol acts, often with more limited resources for production, styling and promotion. At the same time, close interaction with fans is one of the defining attractions of the underground idol scene.
As a result, an idol’s appearance at a live event can naturally look different from carefully selected promotional photos, which may involve professional makeup, controlled lighting, specific poses, camera angles and digital editing.
The Hallelujah Next video ultimately went viral not only because of the fan’s reaction, but also because it sparked a broader discussion about the expectations created by highly edited images on social media and what happens when fans finally meet their favorite idols face-to-face.
