LayarHijau – As the Chinese urban romance drama The Early Spring (《早春晴朗》) continues to gain popularity, the spotlight has extended beyond leads Jing Boran and Sun Qian. Liu Xiaobei, who plays second male lead Sun Yuanzhu, has unexpectedly captured plenty of viewers’ attention and earned the title of the “most heartbreaking second lead.”
Sun Yuanzhu appears to be a cheerful and gentle man, but beneath that warm exterior, he carries a heavy family burden. As the story moves toward its tragic conclusion, his fate has left large numbers of viewers heartbroken, while Liu Xiaobei’s performance has become one of the drama’s emotional highlights.

In The Early Spring, Sun Yuanzhu comes from a small town and works hard to make his way into a big city, eventually landing the job he had always wanted.
He falls for Shang Zhitou (Sun Qian), but never directly confesses his feelings. Instead, he chooses to stay by her side and express his affection through his actions.
When Shang Zhitou runs into trouble at work, Sun Yuanzhu uses his professional expertise to help her solve a programming problem. After learning that she once lamented never having received flowers, he sends her a different bouquet every day for an entire week.
His thoughtful gestures have prompted viewers to root for him, with many feeling that he deserved better. Some even believe his quiet, attentive personality gives him more of a boyfriend vibe than Luan Nian, the male lead played by Jing Boran.
But Sun Yuanzhu’s most heartbreaking struggle goes beyond his unspoken love. He is also unable to escape the heavy burden placed on him by his family.
His family repeatedly asks him for money, and the prolonged pressure gradually pushes him to his limit. Later in the story, he begins suffering from insomnia and a loss of appetite before eventually reaching a tragic end amid depression and exhaustion.
Liu Xiaobei’s performance in these scenes has become one of the drama’s most tear-jerking moments.
Sun Qian previously shared some behind-the-scenes details about filming the scene. At the time, she was reading Sun Yuanzhu’s farewell letter and immersing herself in the character’s emotions. The director then arranged for Liu Xiaobei to read the letter aloud through an intercom.
The unexpected sound of Liu Xiaobei reading the letter caught Sun Qian off guard and immediately plunged her into grief. She ended up crying so hard that she struggled to stop during filming.
Born in 1998, Liu Xiaobei has previously appeared in several dramas. He played Gao Qiu in My Heroic Husband (《赘婿》), where he joined Guo Qilin and other cast members as part of the “My Heroic Husband Alliance,” gaining recognition through his comedic character.
He later played student Wang Fang in The Days of Being Youthful (《追光的日子》). Liu Xiaobei also appeared in The Spirealm (《致命游戏》) and Youthful Glow (《迎风的青春》).
Now, The Early Spring is helping Liu Xiaobei gain much wider recognition. He also has several upcoming projects, including Where the Mask Ends (《嫁金钗》) and A Touch of Green (《雾里青》), giving viewers even more reason to look forward to his future work.
