LayarHijau – The success of Kung Fu Soccer (功夫女足) continues to soar in Chinese theaters. The comedy film directed by Stephen Chow has grossed over 2 billion yuan (approximately $276 million) at the box office. This milestone has also propelled Lay Zhang (Zhang Yixing) to set a new record in his film career.
According to data from Dengta Professional Edition, as of late July 2026, the total box office revenue of films starring Lay Zhang has reached 10.007 billion yuan (approximately $1.38 billion). This achievement makes him the first male actor born in the 1990s to break the 10 billion yuan box office milestone as a leading actor.

This statistic covers 14 films starring Lay Zhang in leading roles. The calculation excludes omnibus films and brief cameo appearances.
Among all these films, No More Bets (孤注一掷) is the largest contributor, with a box office revenue of approximately 3.851 billion yuan (around $531 million). The film not only became the highest-grossing crime film in Chinese cinema history but also the box office champion of the summer 2023 season.
In addition to No More Bets, Kung Fu Yoga (功夫瑜伽) earned approximately 1.748 billion yuan (around $241 million) and was previously the box office champion of the 2017 Lunar New Year holiday. Meanwhile, The Island (一出好戏) collected about 1.355 billion yuan (around $187 million), becoming the box office champion of the 2018 Qixi Festival. Furthermore, Mumu (不说话的爱) garnered approximately 144 million yuan (around $20 million).
Meanwhile, Kung Fu Soccer, which is still screening in theaters, has surpassed the 2 billion yuan mark at the box office. This film is the project that pushed Lay Zhang past the 10 billion yuan total box office milestone as a leading actor.
The competition among comedy films this summer in China has been fierce. Kung Fu Soccer tells the story of the amateur women’s football team Emei, which combines kung fu with soccer while competing in the Supreme Invincible Cup tournament. The team successfully overcomes various obstacles to ultimately win the championship. Many viewers feel that the film maintains Stephen Chow’s signature humor while reviving nostalgia for the director’s classic comedy films through a blend of imagination and spirited sports action.
Beyond commercial success, Lay Zhang is also gaining increasing recognition as an actor. Thanks to his performance in Mumu, he won the Best Actor award at the Golden Crane Awards during China Film Week at the Tokyo International Film Festival, as well as the Phoenix Award for Best Actor.
Meanwhile, his acting in No More Bets earned him a Best Actor nomination at the 37th Hundred Flowers Awards, while The Island garnered him a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Huading Awards.
Currently, Lay Zhang has completed filming for Lovely Lovers (好女好男). He is also preparing to begin shooting for Bloom (Zhang Fang/绽放), a special themed tribute film project, as part of his ongoing efforts to further develop his career in the film industry.
